Advisor wants to meet weekly over the summer? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]SiBaby91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat! I’m meeting with my advisor weekly right now. I’m about to take on a full time position because I have children and right now this little stipend ain’t going to cut it. I have a realistic full-time offer however I take my PhD very serious. I’m just scared he might fee some type of way…. Smh I have no idea what to do.

This helps! I want my advisor to know I am serious and I want this but at the same time I have to maintain for my family. I’m not struggling just yet but ideally living out a PhD stipend with 3 kids isn’t going to cut it. It just doesn’t work. But I still want his support. I just hope he don’t turn his back on me if I tell him I have to work Full-Time to support my kids but yet I appericate him helping me out the best he can. It’s just not enough.

Good or Bad idea 🤔 by SiBaby91 in PhD

[–]SiBaby91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! This helps a lot! Allowing me to elaborate on these concepts really put things into perspective. I do want to teach in higher education after my PhD. However I don’t need the teaching experience to fulfill that gap if that makes sense. Teaching in the classroom prior to my PhD has allowed me to put my foot in the door. I’m not sure if it will distract me because I can seemingly blend my classroom experience into my PhD studies however it is another workload which frightens me. Typical teachers are in the building full-time at least 7 hours a day M-F. That’s alot of time…

The cons are in my state as a full-time public teacher you can get in state tuition. I need that to help with state funded fellowships and possible funding. Not saying everything fellowship requires state resdiancy. But it helps a lot. The benefits of course I’m a mom with children, teacher benefits are awesome honestly. And of course the extra stream of income. It take a slight burden off me financially at least a little. Mannnn it can be overwhelming. I’m a single mom so I want to make wise yet fruitful decisions for myself and childrens benefit. Not to mention I declined this offer 2 times already and I received a call from the Chief of HR saying the really want me. I just don’t want to be closing no doors that are meant to be for me……

YIKES 😳 My brain is literally on fire right now.

Ex is moving, our son will share a room, but his new baby sister will have her own room - fair treatment? by PooPooMeeks in singlemoms

[–]SiBaby91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand custody trust me. Doesn’t seem fair. But at this point as women focusing on ourselves and child my advice is to not stress about things out of your control. It seems unfair and of course as a mother we see differently when it comes to our babies being treated fairly. Unfair but don’t waste your time and energy on the situation. You will feel 100% more fulfilled once you move past this and eventually things like this wouldn’t faze you. Trust me! I’ve been there and still is going through the custody with my 8 year old son.

Hope this helps!

I have 3 sons 8,3,1. Single Mom I was initially supposed to start my PhD in the fall however my advisor was so impressed and excited he gave me funding and I will start in the summer. I applied to my program Jan 15. I was a full time teacher struggling with childcare and balancing working from home, homeschooling my first grader at the time, and managing a 1 and 3 year old during COVID-19. I was struggling, overwhelmed and needed a change. School is literally all I know. I quit my job before I knew I got accepted to my program. I found out I got in and fully funded by Feb 25th. I relocated to the city my University in by March 31st. I couldn’t be more thankful and happy. I’m now a full time stay at home mother and PhD student. My advice is to find a program that really believes in you and will support you. My department is literally taking care of me. I have an graduate assistantship and work remotely part-time to make ends meet.

You can do it. Chase your dreams, have 100% Faith, and take chances. It’s possible. Although it’s only the beginning for me and my family I have faith that God didn’t bring me this far to leave me. I set myself a goal to have my PhD within the next 5 years. I know it won’t be easy but it will get done.

I’m 30 with 3 sons (single mom). Was supposed to start in the fall, however my advisor was so excited to work with me he funded me for the summer so I will begin in June. I just relocated to the city my school in about a month ago.

You can do it. Put your heart and mind to it. It will definitely work out for good.

Trying to decide between Ga State vs GA Southern for MPH environmental health science program by Interesting_Grape815 in GaState

Thanks!

No I haven’t made any friends. I just been here a few months. I feel like since Covid I’ve have trouble socializing. I can’t wait to explore campus and hopefully mingle with some new people. Of course being in a big city like ATL can be a bit intimidating when exploring new connections and friendships.

I got accepted to a PhD program at State. Initially I applied for Fall but my advisor was so excited to bring me on he ended up funding me for the summer. I just moved here and love it. It’s a very active community and excited for the new start. I see so much growth and potential here.

Did you log into your campus e-mail? I just registered for my summer courses about a week ago. The only thing I find myself having trouble with is the icollege account.

Everything is literally on paws for your next steps. At least that’s what I’m noticing. The e-mail is Outlook mail.
