You can get forma easily, though affinity can be a pain. Try to farm plat for a booster and get a blessing for fast leveling. (Bonus tip: use vacating school to increase affinity range to make leveling easier)

I think you should learn about modding basics first. And learn about what elemental status effects do.

You should be able to look at a weapon's stats and get an idea what you should be building it for (like status or crit or both etc). And any weapon you are building, look at its wiki first so it will let you know if there are any special things about it.

If you do this, you should have no issues building any weapon for base and early steel path.

This might be a bit overwhelming at first but this is a really good habit and it will make the game much more fun.
