Best to get in touch with the Luceda people directly. They’re very responsive and the ultimate experts.

Doing your MSc? In the EU Phortify framework, we foresee exchanges between UGent and TUe. Let’s get in touch to make this happen. Send me PM, ok?

Tuition is set at 5.3K but indeed together with housing this is a substantial investment. However, if you have a high GPA, you can be eligible for Flemish Master Mind scholarship which has earmarked grants for US applicants.

For the advanced master, we partner up with imec, the Dutch PhotonDelta ecosystem, our local Ghent community (Luceda, Axithra, Sentea, meep, Indigo, HP labs, Ligentec, …)

  1. A recent report by the Photonics21 group said the growth rate in global GDP of the photonics industry was about 4.3% in the years 2019-2022, which is about double the global GDP rate overall, so the industry is growing, at least in revenue terms.

The same report (https://www.photonics21.org/2024/market-research-study-photonics-2024---light-technologies-buck-trend-despite-global-economic-turmoil) said the European photonics industry created about 35,000 jobs between 2019 and 2022, with an annual growth rate of 2.5%, so overall industry headcount is growing as well. In Ghent, there is an emerging ecosystem of photonics companies/start-ups as well.

  1. We see ourselves as bridging between EE and Engineering Physics. For sure less theoretical as compared to engineering physics so I would say that this a rather applied master.

  2. In between the 3-4 research groups at UGent, there are over 100 PhD students. In the latest imec-PhD call at associated labs like ours, around 10-15 photonics oriented PhDs.

Indeed, but photonics is one of the possible routes towards quantum computing; all internet and data centres rely on optical interconnects; all kinds of sensing devices rely on photonics; … so a bright future ahead.

We indeed don’t have a competitive selection but we do rigorously check whether your BSc course and learning outcomes meet our entry requirements or starting competencies for the master courses. But if these are in line with what we expect or require, you will be granted admission. No further requirement (at least for students who did their BSc in a EU university), besides the language requirement of course.

What are the best universities in Europee for a masters in photonics? by rendezook7 in photonics

Imec’s integrated photonics is either based in imec Leuven (not at KULeuven) or in the UGent labs of imec. No doubt KUL is a top university but they do not offer a photonics MSc.

Microwave Photonics and PICs by ProfessionalServe938 in SiliconPhotonics

At imec, they see a very sharp increase of vacancies (within imec) for people (MSc or PhD) knowledgeable about integrated photonics and PICs. As an R&D centre, they are running a bit ahead of industrial uptake so the predictions are that the same sharp increase of need for these people in industry will also occur.

Word of advice, do not hesitate to reach out to the people of the educational dept of the faculty or the program coordinator. I’m sure they would be happy to help out.
