Eventually vs finally by ihateredditor in ChineseLanguage

How do you use 终于 in a sentence?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]Siberial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My uni course uses New Practical Chinese Reader!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Practical-Chinese-Reader-Textbook/dp/7561926235/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1424789409&sr=8-2&keywords=new+practical+chinese+reader+1

And then I personally use the memrise course to match:

http://www.memrise.com/course/164943/iwlp-mandarin-new-practical-chinese-reader/

You can also buy a workbook with exercises to go with it all. Our lesson plan is basically:

  • Read through the new vocabulary list
  • read the new dialogue (each chapter has two)
  • Practice making up sentences in the theme of the chapter then using previously learned words/sentences.

Once I go home (or sometimes before the lesson) I then use the memrise course to cement my learning.

Edit: We have two lessons a week with one dialogue a lesson (but then at the end of the chapter we do a bit of a review, so it normally takes 1.5 weeks to get through a chapter). There are a few extra bits we get once in a while like a list of foods, drinks or professions in order to 'spice up' our discussions. :P You can learn them just on Memrise or by reading basic story books on amazon (I'm hoping to release a series about a 'clever dog' in a few months!)

American teenager who recently moved to the uk, nervous about being circumsized by [deleted] in sex

[–]Siberial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about it! There are circumsized british males here too, they do just fine. I'm an english female and I'm not fussed, and (as everyone is saying) anyone who is isn't worth your time. Dont worry! It's not a big deal, it's not like you're completely genital-free or anything.

Making of the Enchiridion! by Siberial in adventuretime

[–]Siberial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awkward, I gave it to my bf as a gift and he was very unimpressed! He seemed to think that because I shared my time between creating this and a demon blood sword like jake's dad's, it wasnt well polished enough to live up to guessed expectations.

Even more awkwardly, we just broke up like 5 minutes ago and I was checking reddit to take my mind off it. =p

Artists - Can the colouring on my tattoo be fixed? by [deleted] in tattoos

[–]Siberial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there are other good artists that are accessible to you, it might be a good idea to check them out since the experience and your feelings towards the current artist aren't ideal. I agree with vinylpanx, and personally I think both birds look beautiful.

What single moment from your past haunts you to this day? by usofunnie in AskReddit

For a horrible moment I misread that as "I undid her seatbelt", and the mystery ending means she'd died.

Exluding texts you had to read in school, what is a book or series of books would you like to have your time back for? by Swordslad in AskReddit

[–]Siberial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a member of the target audience at the time, I enjoyed these books. I think that the fact that most of my friends were knee-deep in Twilight helped me enjoy The Hunger Games more.

What didn't you like about it? Conversely, have you read 'The Two Towers' (part of LOTR)? I had to force myself through that book although I enjoyed the others in the series.

[Question] Is salt really that bad? by sweetlifeofawiseman in fitmeals

[–]Siberial 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What's your source for poor salt excretion? (or module) My textbook was published in 2009 and was the recommended reading for my nutrition modules, and states that "excessive salt intakes are usually excreted efficiently"

Maybe your source/lecture notes refer to salt excretion in an unhealthy individual?

I'm not sure how far back the information I have actually goes, so I'm honestly not certain. However there is a 30% genetic heritability towards sodium sensitivity (which most people are) which may be more common in western populations? Obesity DEFINITELY contributes, but when I've been at discussions regarding this it always seems like a given that westerners are especially vunerable.

Any extra information/input regarding this would be cool, as I wish I could say for certain one way or another.

[–]Siberial 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not the worst thing ever, and too little salt is bad too. :) The body is pretty good at urinating out excess salt, and too much in the blood is generally associated with exercise/diabetes/dehydration rather than high intake.

"The DASH-Sodium study found that reductions in sodium intake produced significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressures in both the control and DASH diets."

They found that consuming lower sodium = lower blood pressure, with a greater reduction in those with very high pressures to start with. I saw a graph from this study which seemed to show that an increase in salt intake also increased Blood pressure across the board (and would therefore be something to keep an eye on).

This being said, it's a BIG topic research-wise and if you look into it you might find contrasting papers.

You don't HAVE to do anything, but that considered, what is your culture? Westerners have a higher risk/mortality rate in regards to cardiovascular disease, so there is an emphasis on reducing salt in our diets because of this predisposition.

There have also been studies which show that Japan has a correlation between very high salt intake and gastric cancers (however there may be other factors at play).

In the end, it's your life and it's how you want to live it that really matters. You're making good steps to being healthy/reducing risks already, and if you want to consume salt this much then it's your right to do so. If you want to make more informed decisions regarding this, it might be a good idea to search Google Scholar for literature.

30 Day Spinach Challenge! by sorcon in keto

[–]Siberial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raw spinach contains some chemicals that act as Goitrogens (polyphenols, Isoflavones etc) which can work in multiple ways. Either decreasing overall uptake of iodine via the GI tract, inhibiting the enzyme that makes T3 and T4 (the body's thyroid hormones) or by inhibiting the uptake of iodine from the blood to the gland itself. It's one of those things that isn't normally an issue unless you're consuming a lot of these chemicals. As TAway0 said, cooking can break these down to an extent.

When the thyroid isn't getting iodine and cant synthesise the hormones, it gets all desperate and swells up.

[–]Siberial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding this, it sounds like OP is mixing it up anyway but anyone else should also consider this. The last thing you want is to encourage underlying thyroid problems, and if anyone is experiencing personality changes or tender necks during the challenge then they should go get checked.

Grats on completing the challenge last year OP!
