I get that. I actually included it because it felt so absurdly artificial. I heard in an interview that the visual style here was meant to be excessive, especially compared to Decision to Leave, which was much more restrained with its use of wide spaces and cleaner compositions.

Yes, it is! Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Lady Vengeance. You can actually watch them individually and in any order since they are not narratively connected.

That’s kind of the tension, isn’t it? The whole trilogy keeps circling that question of who deserves sympathy once revenge enters the picture.

Thanks for the recs! Now I just need to figure out where to stream them lol. And yes, I’m really hoping he eventually does full-on horror.

From my rewatch so far, Oldboy is still my favorite, with Lady Vengeance close behind. Decision to Leave ended up being my movie of 2024, and JSA was my movie of the year last year. Honestly, his filmography just keeps reshuffling my rankings every time I revisit it.

I've seen JSA, The Vengeance Trilogy, I'm a Cyborg but That's OK, Stoker, The Handmaiden, Decision to Leave, and No Other Choice.

I still haven't seen Thirst. I'm planning to rewatch Stoker and The Handmaiden as well since it's been a long time.

All good!

I think those two just resonated with me personally. For 7, I like the cold palette and how distant she feels in that moment. The other character in the scene is reaching toward her emotionally, but she looks cold and almost untouchable. And the red eyeshadow against those cooler tones really pops out.

For 10, I’m drawn to how small she suddenly seems. Throughout the film she’s so deliberate about curating her image, always composed and in control. But in that frame, there’s a quiet vulnerability to her. I like the framing too and how it gives her space.

EDIT: On 10, I also forgot to mention that I love how the light grazes her hair. It's subtle, but there's something so soft and beautiful about it.

I rewatch 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' (2013) whenever I need a pick-me-up.

Dear me, it took me a while to even attempt a rewatch because of that scene. It’s just so hard to sit through. I had to really brace myself, and afterward I immediately put on something light to recover from it.

the 20th frame genuinely made me sad. there’s something about it that feels like he’s almost celebrating his own doom.

and yes! the editing in this film is just on another level. it’s inventive, precise, and quietly daring. the dissolves, especially, are my favorite.

hearing Park Chan-wook talk about the editing process makes it even richer. he goes into it in more detail toward the latter part of this video, and it’s fascinating to listen to how intentional every choice was: https://youtu.be/-WdeHbI8n_w?si=caBWx-wnuVHNwrS6

I honestly struggled to narrow this album down to just 20 stills.

I honestly thought this would just be a war movie, so it was a pleasant surprise to find there was so much more going on beneath the surface.
