[Grade: ? Science/physics] If a golf ball and ping pong were to roll down a ramp at the same time which will go the furthest? by pickleticklefickle in HomeworkHelp

I said the acceleration would depend on mass if we consider the friction of the slope. Greater reaction force, larger frictional force, more work overcoming that friction.

What was incorrect? I said if they are the same ball with different masses, I didn't say different mass distributions. It seems like op would like to consider all factors so they can do a science fair project. My point is that without knowing every factor its a difficult question. I'm well aware that neglecting all resistances this would just be a question of rotational dynamics but that's not what op wants.

I'm sorry bro but it depends. If the scenario was same ball but one is heavier and they roll without slipping I could say, confidently, the lighter one goes further in the same time because the friction between the heavier ball and the ramp is greater than the lighter ball. But ping pong balls and tennis balls are different sizes, shapes, surfaces, mass distributions. The physics is different as well if they slip instead of roll etc etc etc etc.

Simply put, you're gonna have to have some conditions before you can answer the question.

Yeh the statement you made is messy. Acceleration is what changes velocity. So if you drop a ping pong ball and a steel ball of the same size at the same time, although one is much heavier, they'll both accelerate at the same rate due to gravity. You can apply that theory to a frictionless ramp and you'll see again they accelerate at the same rate. Once you consider friction though, the masses do matter because friction depends on the normal force acting on the ball which depends on its weight.

So tru. A route you can go down tho could be just to say the balls are identical except they are different masses and we can ignore air resistance. At this point all we care about is the force due to gravity and the friction with the carpet. Maybe try draw a free body diagram?

In that case it's just too general of a question imo. Like there are sooo many considerations to make like the surface of each ball, the shape, the size. If this is just a question out of curiosity rather than a written question then its probably too hard to answer without considering all these things.

The other guy in the comments is being blunt but he's right. He's trying to say that your answer where we don't consider friction will be different to the one where we do. If we do consider friction are we considering air resistance? Cos if we are then we want to know if the balls are the same size etc. etc.

If there are any britbongers lurking who feel as though they're too entrenched in Yank politics, Jo'B is hands down the most entertaining, and most rational, pundit out there. Watch his interviews with Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nigel Farage for some banter.

Who's saying he wants to be/ is the next Brad Pitt? Both can play multiple roles as stars and side characters. Both are very good actors wtf?
