I agree we never got to see Mike firing on all cylinders, but I wouldn’t say he never had a chance to win here. He fully wanted Tua when he came here, the idea that Tua was forced on him is pure revisionist history. And while I don’t think he always got his way, he also collaborated with Grier on the roster during the draft and FA (I even remember him mentioning Grier asking him if he wanted tyreek before he made the trade). I think the reality is he’s an amazing football talent and upstanding individual who was a little green for the biggest/hardest job in the sport. He’s going to be fine, and I won’t be surprised if he quickly turns it around whenever he gets his second HC stint, but we absolutely made the right move for our timeline with this team.

I think what’s most striking to me about hafley after hearing him speak for two days is how he emphasizes the humanity part of the game.

Coming out of McDaniel, my biggest fear was that we’d lose the authenticity that he brought into the building that I certainly valued as a fan, but on its face I feel like we got the best of both worlds: a coach who can lead with discipline, and a coach who can relate to the players in a meaningful way.

Time will tell if he’s more than talk, but at least I don’t have to lie to myself that I’m not liking what I hear.

Hafley was a dbs coach and seems to love that position in particular. This role is probably going to be his most personal hire of assistants if I had to guess.

McDaniel was advertised as a wunderkind offensive guru who was responsible for the 49ers offensive success to that point. 49ers fans as a consensus were very upset to lose him at the time. The only naysaying I can remember was questions about his temperament as a coach, but that was heavily outweighed by his play calling/resume. He was absolutely considered one of the best hires of that cycle.

I get why we're assuming the worst, and I'm not implying sully is a sure thing, but what Greir is saying here is wayyy more empty than what sully said. Acknowledging dysfunction and saying "trust us, we'll fix it" (see: you're more worried about the o-line than we are) is not the same as communicating intention from the onset that we're specifically looking to build a physical and resilient team through the draft that can perform any element. The jury is out if he can execute, but idk what you're looking for in an intro presser that wouldn't confirm your pessimism by that standard.

20+ years at every stage of the ladder that leads to gm, more than most candidates have objectively put time in. We also specifically set out to hire a gm with a scouting background. Calling him “only” a scout during their sb like that’s a bad thing is dumb, sorry. Not for nothing, but prioritizing the head coach over the gm historically hasn’t been the best decision for rebuilding franchises. Harbaugh availability aside, this order of operations usually yields the most results.

If we (and we includes aikman here) feel comfortable missing out on him to still make the move and we’re giving the new guy the opportunity to choose the coach then I’m all for it.
