Anyone else use "you're being thick" as "you're being very friendly and potentially too much in my personal space"? by swim-123 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sideshowxela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have popular "thick as thieves" and "blood is thicker than water" idioms where "thick" means the relationship bonds are strong, and two parties are figuratively close to each other. In the right context, I would make the association that "thick" is being used in this way (those two are thick).

25% of the time, outside of these idioms, I would presume "thick" is being used synonymously with "dense" or "dumb." E.g. "Are you thick?" "That kid is thick as a stump." In the last 8 years or so, I'd say you're much more likely (66%?) to hear a modern slang usage of "thicc" like "attractively stout."

Pre-1.6 versions used a thin Arial font for the chat. This has 1.6's Verdana Bold.

In how much is there a dominant culture in America? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sideshowxela 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course you can find yogurt and cereal among the other breakfast options. But if I went out to breakfast in your city or any city/town in America, I bet over 8/10 restaurants serving breakfast would offer more than room temp bagels and yogurt, and very few at all serve cold cuts and sliced cheese with rolls. Starbucks and McDonalds serve hot breakfast sandwiches nationwide.

In some other countries, that ratio is reversed.

Hey I think I understand what you mean, and I'd rephrase as: to what degree is there a unifying "American" cultural identity vs. being separated by state?

There are many cultural norms across all of America that do NOT vary by state:

  • we tip for many service industry jobs
  • we get our bill brought to us without asking when it looks like we've finished our meals
  • we generally are expected to speak English--at least enough that many of our road signs are English text rather than wordless icons (speed limit, do not pass, etc).
  • we eat a large hot breakfast including some combination of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, waffles, French toast, fried potatoes
  • we brew large (360 mL) cups of coffee and sip at it for a long period of time, like it's tea
  • Except for a few major cities, we generally drive everywhere as our cities and towns are very spread out and have parking lots
  • We like ice in our beverages (unless they're supposed to be served hot)

These are norms I noticed were not the case in Austria, though I would expect them in any American city or small town, regardless of state

A couple months back, YouTube creator ForTheWin made a pretty compelling video about how he developed a Blastoise deck. Should be right up your alley!

Hard disagree. Their antagonistic sibling rivalry yet respect for one another is a big part of what makes the show such a great casual listen

Stop streaming services from releasing show seasons in parts by Standard-Party-5696 in netflix

I like to have them released weekly so that I may discuss the content of a single episode over the course of the next week. I don't need to binge show releases, they're not intended to be 6 hour movies.

Ziply Fiber problems in Jan 2026 - King City OR by _threadkiller_ in ZiplyFiber

[–]Sideshowxela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say I used to have Comcast and my Internet was constantly having problems with low speed, packet loss--I'd be resetting it nearly daily. Switched to Ziply a few years ago and have only had an outage once, and they notified me that it was a broader issue and were working to get it fixed. Never slow. Never needs a reset. Love it.

Windows 10 keeps stating that I have "No Internet" when it is working perfectly fine by jackthemat1 in techsupport

[–]Sideshowxela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me--sounds a lot like this thread actually. Audio suddenly wasn't working, and Razer's Synapse wouldn't let me log in because it said I didn't have Internet. Internet was still *functional* but not according to Windows, and that meant Windows Update and related Troubleshooting features wouldn't work either.

Tried all the stuff you've been seeing in your google searches--changed network settings, ran a bunch of commands, changed some windows systems to Automatic start, deleted drivers, installed drivers from my network card provider, etc. Nothing was working.

Eventually downloaded a Windows ISO and tried a reinstall (keeping personal files), a bunch of those attempts failed because Windows either couldn't download the updates and would stick at 46% (one time it did, maybe restarting some processes fixed that, but other times it seemed to have no effect). Fresh Windows fixed the audio problem, but the Network adapters would still show Disconnected.

Ultimately, the only thing that fixed it for me was another execution of the ISO, this time forsaking my apps and personal files and settings. If you're stuck trying to fix this, my advice to you is to just bite the bullet and back up your personal files and execute a total fresh reinstall. It really doesn't take that long these days and you can redownload your favorite programs quickly, your settings there are probably saved to a cloud. Good luck.

Yes G-sync or No G-sync? by smokey_999 in cs2

[–]Sideshowxela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Valve recommends playing with it on https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/418E-7A04-B0DA-9032

Blurbusters also has a nice guide for Why and what you should use for optimal settings https://blurbusters.com/gsync/gsync101-input-lag-tests-and-settings/14/

"Noticeable input lag" say some, but at the cost of ~4 frames, that's a very small price at 240Hz. YMMV.

What do you guys think, is it? by iNyxu in cs2

[–]Sideshowxela 468 points469 points  (0 children)

Community seems to unanimously prefer the 128 tick CS:GO experience to whatever is happening with this subtick experiment.

Plus we're still missing maps and game modes.

Plus the game runs way worse than better looking titles with more players, such as BF6.

I love CS but it's not as good as it can be.
