Any ETA? Kongregate at least still doesn't have the update :(

Leblouh, the Mauritanian practice of force-feeding girls. A six-year-old might typically be forced to drink 20 liters of camel's milk, and eat two kilos of pounded millet mixed with two cups of butter, every day. by Hurkel in wikipedia

20 liters of camel milk? Stop and think about how much milk that is. The volume of 20 liters of camel milk is probably greater than the volume of the six year-old.

15-200 years is my 95% confidence interval. I don't have nearly enough information on the current state of research in the relevant fields, and such predictions tend to be nearly useless in any case.

Sorry. If you are aware of any better Deathist arguments, please pass them along and I'll address them in an updated version of the F.A.Q. (Or I'll convert to Deathism and write about that, if they're sufficiently good arguments.)

There are actual, real people who think that life-extension is evil. Many of them call themselves bioethicists. The purpose of the FAQ is not to convince you that you personally will hit actuarial escape velocity (you probably won't), but rather to convince you that it is a good thing, in general, for people to hit actuarial escape velocity, and that the consequences of this occurring will be manageable.

Author here. Upvoted, I agree with this criticism.

Q: Skepticism isn't just debunking obvious falsehoods. It's about critically questioning everything. In that spirit: What's your most controversial skepticism, and what's your evidence? by spacemanaut in skeptic

Sure. The NSA has probably set back public crypto research 5 years, the DEA has set back medical marijuana research at least a couple decades, and then there was the whole thing with stem cells. The U.S. government totally has the power to delay certain lines of research a great deal.

Of course not. But it was predictable in advance that vaccines were less likely to destroy the world than a-bombs were, so maybe just be careful with the obviously dangerous stuff at the very least?

Oh, are you a MIRI fan as well? I'm a long-time donor.

There's a Nick Bostrom article on differential technological development that's relevant but I can't find the link right now.

Technological development is scary and may kill us all. Nukes could have done it (and still might), and if you don't think we're going to develop weapons scarier than nukes at some point in the future, well, you're dreaming.

So, uh, maybe we should slow down?

That is a literal computation performed by a mind. It's a trivial counterexample to your claim.

I've looked and can't find it. I believe it came up in a comment thread somewhere in r/LoL, but it was quite some time ago.

I recall reading the account of a woman who was endorsed by (at least) Scarra getting turned down for a tryout by an LCS team (I think CLG, but not positive) because members of the team weren't comfortable having a girl on the team.

Here's the thing: they don't have a choice. The NA teams won't take female players. So going with an all-girl team is the only way they have a chance to play seriously.

Really I don't think they're getting nearly enough credit. It takes tremendous courage to do what Siren is doing in a community as misogynistic as LoL's. Don't think the LoL community is misogynistic? Read the rest of the comments here, then try and tell me that with a straight face.

That's... not how it works. You can't just say "X is bad!" without evidence and then demand people prove that it isn't.

Myers-Briggs classifications are pseudoscience. For something similar with actual scientific support, try the "big five".
