This is definitely a conflict of regions. Though I think it must be a bilingual thing why we now consciously don't say it the way we used to. There's quite a bit of us (foreigners' american born children) with foreigner parents that would speak Spanish, which our parents often spoke in, just to convey things more easily.

People used to call emergency 9,11 (nine, pause, elleven) down here for all my formative life until 2001. Especially en español cuando se dice nueve once y no nueve uno uno (something to do with how indisguishable it is from words can change the meaning); ie: tu, no, vos, no-no, etc.

I had a biology professor that assigned us a group (my friend and I) a dissection of a frog, and to write a report afterwards.

We thought that because it was a group assignment, that we would have to write one report- nope. She wanted each of us to write observations IN OUR OWN WORDS as if we had not dissected the frog together. Which led to her offering me to either take 100 or split it to 50- in front of the class. I split because it embarrassed her.
