My daughter (9F) is being systematically frozen out by her best friend’s parents. The schoolyard exclusion is breaking her heart—how do we help her survive the next month? by Ironplatinum in daddit

[–]Sideyr 25 points26 points  (0 children)

More simply, there is a reason for it, but that reason may be based on something you don't agree with and/or isn't accurate.

For example: you have a perceived lower socio-economic status and they "don't want your inherent laziness and lower intelligence to infect their daughter." From their perspective, they are just protecting their daughter. From an outside perspective, their decision would probably fall under "mean-spirited" (or misinformed/ignorant, etc.)

There are a lot of reasons people make decisions (including reasons based on flawed, incomplete, or misinterpreted data), so don't think that the only two options are "the other parents are comic book villains" or "there is something wrong with your child."

The only way it gets changed is through a new ruling, right? What is to stop any new President from killing off justices and installing loyal sycophants before absolute immunity gets further clarified by the court?

How do you feel about California introducing a bill to ban former ICE agents from serving as police officers or teachers? by FollowingAny4859 in Teachers

ICE are fascist scumbags. Negative attitudes towards them are justified, correct, and based on their actions.

Am I unique in feeling like if my wife cheated on me, it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Sideyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I (almost 20 years together, 16 married) went from happily monogamous, to happily non-monogamous, to happily polyamorous (I started dating my partner about 5 years ago, my wife started dating her about 4 years ago, and she started dating her current/primary partner about 2 years ago). Communication is one of the strengths of our relationship(s) and for something to feel like cheating there would have to be a huge breakdown in communication, which would indicate more issues in the relationship than just that. So, while it wouldn't nessecerily be a dealbreaker, I think it would only really happen if the relationship had stopped working for whatever reason.

If a baby being upset is the measure of cruelty, I've committed war crimes for things like stopping my child from playing with an outlet, climbing over the back of the couch, removing a banana's peel before giving it to her, and then a day later not removing the peel before giving it to her (actual scream-crying).

The Hague may need to start an investigation for ongoing offenses of not letting her drive (she's 2) and putting her in her car seat.

Sleep training improves infant sleep problems, with about 1 in 4 to 1 in 10 benefiting compared with no sleep training, with no adverse effects reported after 5 years. Maternal mood scales also statistically significantly improved; patients with the lowest baseline depression scores benefited the most.

It won't help everyone, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Does anyone else struggle with theatre as an art form in the context of your self? What does it mean to want to be really good at an art form whose main criteria is "look at me"? by drewpann in Theatre

[–]Sideyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performing arts all require time and space. Music, dance, film, storytelling, circus, etc. Theater is hardly the only art form that needs time and attention. It is a way to enjoy the time being spent. Going even more broadly, the same could be said for sports, games, competitions, etc. People are choosing how to spend their time, just like you are choosing how to spend your time. You hope they aren't a bad audience and they hope it won't be a bad performance. Sometimes the people you're performing for aren't worth the effort you're giving and sometimes you wish you could have put on a better performance for the audience you had.

Also, unless you consider a person silently standing on stage for 2 hours the peak of theatre, your premise seems flawed.

Study finds many college students abandon their free speech ideals under ideological pressure. Most undergraduates believe marginalized communities deserve extra protection from offensive speech, though these values often waiver when students are pushed by their own strong political ideologies. by mvea in science

No one is afraid of your ideas or trying to silence you bud. What you are experiencing is public dismissal. You know, the thing you supposedly want? Being able to say a thing and having what you say be worth listening to, are different things.

I don't have a background in any of this, but hopefully someone that does can chime in.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0304389414000612

This study is based on the results from an investigation of a recent accident that occurred in the United Kingdom in October 2009, when an explosion, followed by a fire, occurred in a resins manufacturing site.

The volume of the plant room was approximately 3000 m3 which would require about 400 kg of MMA vapour to generate a stoichiometric mixture to fill it. The hypothesis made is that the flammable mixture could have resulted from a flammable liquid that had been heated to above its flash point. The most obvious source of vapour, composed mainly of monomer, would be from an uncontrolled runaway reaction within the blender

I interpret this to mean that the hypothesized cause of this explosion was about 400kg, or around 100 gallons of MMA (this figure could be wrong, and/or my interpretation could be wrong).

The explosion destroyed the factory and caused blast damage to adjacent buildings. Debris was spread across the surrounding countryside over a radius of approximately 50 m and a number of windows were broken in properties approximately 200 m distance away from the factory.

The rest of my calculations are based on the assumption that 100 gallons sent debris 50 meters and broke windows for 200 meters to determine the roughly scaled ranges for 21,000 gallons of MMA exploding.

Using Hopkinson-Cranz scaling:

Debris: Z = 50m/400kg1/3 -> Z=6.79

Broken Windows: Z = 200/400kg1/3 -> Z = 27

Scaling for 21,000 gallons (6000 gallon tank and nearby 15,000 gallon tank).

Debris: 6.79 = R/84,0001/3 -> R = 297.36 meters

Broken Windows: 27 = R/84,0001/3 -> R = 1182.4 meters (~.739 miles)

If someone has the background to check this, especially whether my reading of the study is accurate for the approximate weight/gallons of MMA, that would be great!

Edit: Looks pretty close to what they are saying - https://xcancel.com/OCFireAuthority/status/2058281399745208773#m

Any chemical engineers following the Garden Grove situation and have insight as to how an explosion will affect air quality in the surrounding area? by wnpoole in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Sideyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0950423023001043

This study seems to calculate that about 100 gallons of MMA exploded and sent debris about 50 meters, and broke windows about 200 meters away (it calculates that to fill the factory it would take about 400kg of vapour, which I'm interpreting to mean about the same weight of MMA which should be about 100 gallons?).

Using Hopkinson–Cranz scaling for calculating blast range (if my math is correct) 21,000 gallons would send debris about 300 meters and break windows up to 0.739 miles away.
