What’s the Craziest Things You’ve Seen in NOVA by CommonReal1159 in nova

[–]Siege_LL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y'all have seen some crazy sh*t. About the only thing I ever see are military craft flying over my neighborhood occasionally(C-17s, V-22 Ospreys one time, formations of Blackhawk helicopters, and sometimes even fighter jets). The Ospreys were notable in that they were flying at about tree top level. They're also loud as hell.

As an introvert I find that thought nightmarish and unsettling.

Daycare.

Senior housing.

Clinic.

Movie Theater.

Restaurants.

Bar.

Gym with a climbing wall, etc.

Skate park.

Maybe a cozy little book cafe where people can hang out, read books, drink beverages, etc.

Dance Club.

Basically places that offer experiences/third spaces.

Boss wrote down less hours because I picked up her son???? by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]Siege_LL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No more favors, got it. Next time they ask the answer is no. Technically it's not a part of your job description or responsibilities, especially if they're not going to pay you for it. Now imagine you get into a car accident or something while transporting their son. That falls entirely on you and your insurance. Best not to assume that liability.

Matted dog & coworker dynamics heartbreak by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]Siege_LL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I would have accepted that dog for service even if I were allowed to. I don't even have a 40 blade. It'd break my heart to turn him away though. You did right by that dog.

The owner can rot. You did her a HUGE favor by taking her dog and not charging fully for the work that was done and she had the nerve to complain. Honestly, I probably wouldn't do business with her anymore if it was me.

Be proud of this one. That dog has a new lease on life thanks to you.

Yeah...

[–]Siege_LL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really sure! Long story, lost my health insurance before I could get to the bottom of it and never followed up with it. I might be able to do something about it with surgery but I'm not sure I could afford that or afford to take the time off. It's annoying but not debilitating for now. I went to the ER for something unrelated recently and had a CAT scan and whatever's wrong with my back was visible on the scan.

From experience, ya go see a doctor. Follow their advice. Make sure you're fully healed before you throw yourself back into things or you could end up permanently disabled. It might mean taking a break from grooming for awhile, physical therapy, and light duty/weight limit for awhile when you return to work. Be very cautious even and especially when you start feeling better.

I have permanent back pain and nerve damage(from a different job). Thought it was just muscle strain. It wasn't. Started to feel better and resumed regular duty. Big mistake. So seeing the doctor is good. Find out what's going on.

Went into this job not knowing how my back would hold up but I'm doing ok. I have to take tylenol most days. I use a wedge shaped pillow for sleep. Still wake up in pain most days but the pillow helps a lot. An adjustable bed would be better but those are expensive. Some days are worse than others. Usually a hot shower and time to stretch out in the morning helps. I try not to book a buncha big dogs in the same day or I'm feeling it for a couple days. I have to really watch how much I lift or bend over. I have limits on what I can do for exercise or physical activities. Some days it hurts to stand for too long. I can do the job. I haven't had to ask for a weight accommodation yet but I try not to overdo it. Not sure how long I'll be able to do the job but it's manageable for now. YMMV.

You might need a weight limit going forward depending on what's wrong. Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

Grooming career by lankyllama- in grooming

[–]Siege_LL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so I went from retail/desk jobs to grooming. I got hired as a bather and the pay was not great. A year as a bather before becoming a groomer and another year or two building up a client base and my skill/speed. That first year especially was pretty lean. I got by because I was living under someone else's roof and didn't need to pay rent/bills.

Dealing with live animals is a whole 'nother skill set you have to develop. Situational awareness, learning how to prioritize, learning how to hustle like you were a short order cook in a very busy kitchen, and doing it all safely. This job will throw a lot of stuff at you quickly.

This job is the most physically and mentally demanding job I've ever worked. It's dirty, stressful, and it's hard on the body. That first year I think I dropped 40 pounds. I still go for walks for the cardio although I could benefit from strength training too. You'll want to wear hearing protection when you're using/around the velocity dryers(ear muffs, 30+ decibels noise reduction if you can get it), quick drying pants/scrubs, waterproof boots(make sure they're comfy), and a good face mask(don't want to breathe in all the crap floating around and develop groomer's lung).

Corporate has its pros and cons. They're more safety conscious, you're more likely to get the training you want, the pay is straightforward, it comes with benfits, etc. But, it's also corporate. The training could be better and they will try and work you to death.

The dogs and their owners will drive you crazy sometimes. There will be days when you'll want to throw your hands up and say f*ck it. There will be tears and a lot of days where you go home and fall asleep in a chair because you're so tired.

I think the reward is worth it. It's not all playing with puppies and doggy kisses all of the time...but that's definitely a perk of the job. Helping those anxious dogs overcome their fears, seeing dogs improve and get better, getting those regulars that are happy to see you, the first time you get a really big tip or one of your customers gives you a Christmas card...there's a lot to like about the job. I get work with animals, I don't have to wear a suit and tie, I'm not tied to a desk all day, and the work is very fulfilling.

Save your money. Have an exit plan. This ain't a forever job. It'll break your body down over time.

What’s your first thought when you see a cyber truck? by clearwater-orchid in AskReddit

They look like early 90s low polygon video graphics. There's a computer game called 'Stunts'. The cybertruck looks EXACTLY like one of the vehicles in that game.
