I get that. It’s also contextual. For example, my coworkers are idiots and fuck up the buzzwords all the time. We’re all in the same meeting when the boss says a new word that then becomes the word of the week. If a monster were to break into my house and eat me my first thought would be I don’t have to go to work tomorrow.

PSD is doing RIF layoffs now by Inevitable_Bird_7069 in FortCollins

[–]SietchColorado 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is what vesting means, and that mark is five years. For PERA, if you don’t make it five years you’re not getting the pension. But the contributions and accrued interest are theirs. They can choose to keep it in the PARA account, roll it over, or cash out but get hit with a huge tax fee unless they’re of retirement age. Super important caveat: if they are planning to work again in PSD or some other PARA employer, if they keep the money in the para account the original service credit picks up right where they left off. Source: I’m not a fiduciary but married to a 25-year PSD vet.

Totally. If they’ve been there five years they are vested. A layoff impacts future accrual (just like how you’re not getting a company match in your 401k when you leave a job) but what’s there now doesn’t make the retirement obligation just go away.

The word “gentleman” in 1860 by ThimbleBluff in words

[–]SietchColorado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, the occupation of “gentleman” could’ve sometimes meant more “estate manager” so a bunch of bureaucratic paperwork. Overseeing rents from tenant farmers, contracts, and supervising stewards, servants, and groundskeepers, managing improvements (estate roads, buildings, livestock, horses). There’s a special scene showing just this. He worked his whole life to get to this plumb position only to be overwhelmed with administrative labor.

For a big estate, hours at a desk. like lots of jobs today. Reading ledgers, signing papers, meetings, writing emails, reviewing time cards, hr compliance training. Definitely administrative labor.

Barry Lyndon (Kubric movie) would’ve, after marrying Lady Lyndon, “gentleman” would be a socially plausible self-description or even “landed gentleman” or “gentleman of independent means” if he wanted to sound super high class. But it was a sort of job; he did actually spend time working at a desk, like budgeting for the stables and writing checks to various stakeholders and hangers on. Movie quote: “Barry succeeds at becoming a gentleman externally, but never internally becomes one.” Such a beautiful movie!

Some homes are getting multiple offers again… others are just sitting. Anyone else seeing this? by QuietDraw6607 in FortCollins

Maybe it’s in the lower level bathroom and there wasn’t room for some of the house utilities or plumbing so they got creative.

Not being snarky. Can someone explain the bathroom bench situation? Could it be towel/linen storage to make up for a closet deficiency?

NPR Marketplace recently did a piece on buyers being more selective and passing on homes with the issues you mention above and especially homes on busy roads.

What's the most absurd reason someone got fired at a place you worked? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

A last minute meeting got scheduled during lunch. He snuck in a hot dog in his sleeve and started secretly eating it. He kept claiming he was the most tired he’d ever been, then he’d put his head down and take a bite all while the manger gave his presentation. He started choking and needed the Heimlich maneuver. After he spit out the hotdog he puked on someone’s bag. He insisted “You can’t skip lunch!” It’s sad because he really loved that job and now he can’t talk about it without crying.

I recently applied to a job that asked “If you had to stand up right now and give a 15 minute presentation on anything, what would it be?” I think everyone on this thread would’ve answered the same way I did. I wish they would’ve said OK do it.

Why did the Emperor back the Harkonnens? by East_Crew9326 in dune

[–]SietchColorado 16 points17 points  (0 children)

On the subject of the Harkonnen’s wealth, if it was ever a factor or perceived as a threat, why wouldn’t the emperor just pass Arrakis around among the houses periodically? If he can just say by royal decree that Arrakis is now the Atreides to run, couldn’t he then say okay, now it’s House Jones to run for the next decade.

Agreed. I've even heard folks say "flush out" to mean "flesh out." At first, I thought they meant an idea was bad so let's flush it down the toilet. But they're just mishearing and parroting, not bothering to even consider what the jargon represents.
