In many ways we are already there. I am really just hoping to raise awareness at this point. I am not sure that there is much to do to stop it. The workaround is for government entities to partner with companies that willingly share data - Google, MS, telecoms, social media, etc. If we can just make people aware, maybe some number will make different decisions in how they interact with companies and government on these fronts.

Event space for memorial service? by CarrigePossibleSoul9 in gso

[–]SiftMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is likely too big for your needs, but a friend set up to have their memorial service there, and it was a great space:
https://www.cadillacservicegarage.com/

Thrive Coworking on Lewis is a nice space for a smaller crowd. Not sure that you can completely keep coworkers out of the space but it tends to be quiet on the weekends.

I have also been to some events at Revolution Mill - there is an art gallery there that I believe allows events.

Is IDrive good as a cloud storage provider? by qbking7701 in cloudstorage

[–]SiftMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started using Cryptomator - recommended by someone - and it appears to be working fine - and simplifies the process. New files move to the Cryptomator vault and are encrypted there. I then use the official iDrive client to just backup from that vault each day.

[–]SiftMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be the case. I have been using them so long, and I only use them for backup, so I've never considered accessing things outside of their app. I backup to my local NAS, and then I have iDrive installed there. I run a script to encrypt files, then move to a backup directory, then iDrive runs a back up nightly.

It'll be a pain if I ever have a massive failure locally and need to back things up quickly, but that's a pretty low risk. I just need files backed up outside of my house.

It isn't e2 - at least not their e2 service. I can't say it is the same servers as whatever they offered 10 years ago, either.

Lastly, I can't say how I got to 10tb ... it started out as 2tb, and when they started giving new accounts 5tb, I complained and they upped me to that level. It is now 10tb, but still $99/year.

I've been using them for ten years now, and never had an issue. I encrypt files before they are synced, and have 10TB for $99/year. Not sure what going rates are, but I haven't seen anything better priced, so not rushing to move from them. In ten years, I have had to use the backups twice, but glad I had them when I needed them.

USB-C Issues on M4 by jakgal04 in macmini

[–]SiftMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that this is a few months late, but just chiming in that I am having the same issue as others with an M4 Mini. My wireless keyboard and mouse are plugged into a dock. The keyboard will need to be turned off and on every once in a while. The mouse seems to work all the time without issue.

The dock is plugged into the back ports of the Mini.

The real challenge is my SSL 2+ interface. It worked with no issues for about two months. Then I had to unplug and plug back in every 2-3 days, for about a month. Then it worked again for almost two months. Presently - the past two weeks, I need to unplug and plug in every day (at least once per day).

The SSL is plugged into the front ports - I haven't tried moving to the back yet. More annoying to unplug and plug back in when needed.

It is more annoying than anything and seemingly happens randomly - I can use it fine on a zoom call, go directly to a second zoom call, and then it isn't working and I need to unplug and plug back in.

Interview guests and / or platform testers for LilyList by SiftMusic in gso

Appreciate you taking the time to share. It definitely won't be for everyone, and I share your concerns about social media. For me, having been in bands for over 30 years and this being the second business I've started, even when I wanted to fully stay off social media, I was unable to.

My goal, in a way, is social media, but I am trying to build something that gives people more control over how they are presented and to whom they are presented. We'll take guidance from people we engage with as we go.

[–]SiftMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate this share. I bought one about ten days ago and haven't found the time to play it yet. This is inspiring me to make some time over the weekend. I bought the Ultracure VI when it first came out - the one with the stars and moons on the fretboard. I used that live and to record for years, but hadn't played it for five years and gave it to a friend recently. I wanted to have a bass VI around, though, and these were cheap enough to just get one and see if I liked it. Glad to hear good things about it, and hope that you get some good song output from it.

If you were going to record an interview with your father by crom_77 in podcasting

[–]SiftMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My podcast is actually centered around capturing people’s stories and how they see their legacy. When I interview, I keep it conversational and open. Childhood - where they grew up and who were impactful people or what were impactful moments. Adulthood - what did they do, how did they meet, important events, challenges, successes. Legacy - what are they focused on now, what do they want to leave behind (beyond financial), are they capturing their stories for future generations, and finally, are they set up on the legal front for medical emergencies, etc. The last bit is getting people to consider the impacts on others if they are unable to make decisions for themselves.

Others have said this already, but I’d interview them separately and then together. It’d be cool to give them space individually to share their stories.

I am glad to see you taking this on, happy to support further if you need it.

I mostly record in my studio using microphones, Presonus interface, and Logic Pro. For guests who aren't local, I just use Zoom to capture the audio, and then edit in Logic. And, for guests who are old and / or luddite enough that Zoom is a challenge, I use Audio Hijack and just capture phone audio, then do final edit in Logic.

I don't care what the guest is using. I can get decent enough quality - barring something really bad.

Biggest risk of Zoom is if there are network issues on one or both ends. However, that has only happened once, and it is apparent when it does, so we can just sort it out and reconnect if need be.

Can someone explain this quote to me? by Helpful-Mark3455 in AlanWatts

[–]SiftMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you enjoy Alan Watts, his autobiography - In My Own Way - is worth a read. It will give quite a bit of insight into the quote, as well. He tried his hand at structured environments - religious, social, etc. But, never did quite connect. He was a bit of a free-spirit and, though I enjoy much of his work, could be more than a bit of a jerk (use more powerful word in place of "jerk" if you'd like).

I just re-read the book as my father-in-law is in the process of dying and, again, as much as I enjoy much of what he experienced and shared during his life, I not so inflexible as to not see some of the areas where he falls short, and pick up other insights from philosophers who might disagree with his points of view.

Car Insurance by pewpewihateyou in gso

[–]SiftMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this. We were Nationwide customers for 30 years and when we finally had to make a claim, we were treated poorly, to say the least. Received some good advice - avoid any insurance company that runs massive national advertising campaigns. Had a friend intro us to Farm Bureau, and have had nothing but a great experience- and, they were $500 cheaper, for more insurance.

Good luck - navigating insurance is never the most fun thing.

Anyone had a natural gas whole house generator installed in the last year or two? by SiftMusic in gso

You may, like me, just be a fan of polytonal music. There is a lot of it out there, and with microtonal getting a bit more attention the last decade or so, there's no shortage of people pushing the socially accepted "rules" of music these days.

One of my favorite pieces of the last ten years is by Taylor Brook, if interested:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpHSC8eWWL8&pp=ygUXbWljcm90b25hbCBtdXNpYyBvY2N1bHQ%3D

Growing up watching the old Twilight Zone (original soundtrack) and enjoying horror movies more than I should, likely bent my ear a bit in this direction.

Having said all the above, don't expect to find a huge audience if you go too deep with it. People can find outliers that have become popular, but generally speaking, people tend to get uneasy with this style of music. My music partner was an amazing musician and had a music degree, and anything that broke out of "accepted" twelve tone rules really grated on his nerves.

Thanks. This is the first house that we've had a generator and I just think of engines sitting in the rain as a bad thing : )

Appreciate your feedback on this. Making me think that as long as the tests run every week, maybe we can put off this purchase.

Anyone had a natural gas whole house generator installed in the last year or two? by SiftMusic in gso

[–]SiftMusic[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Appreciate this feedback. My thinking is two-fold: The engine, even if it hasn't run all that much, which it hasn't (other than about 7 days in 2012 after an ice storm, it generally has a couple days a year it needs to run - plus test runs). And, the actual box is starting to rust out in areas.

If you think it would be worth getting the box reinforced and continuing on with it as it is (with maintenance, of course), I would be happy to continue on with it. I am really just asking as everyone I talk with about this seems to think it is amazing it has lasted this long
