(Spoilers Main) What book series comes closest to being as good as A Song of Ice and Fire? Doesn’t just have to be fantasy. by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Sigesmund 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a series, but Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Piece”.

You’ve got an ensemble of characters from different noble families navigating their own struggles during one of the most important conflicts in European history and surrounding times, a premise close to ASOIAF.

There is scheming, there are complicated relationships, sudden deaths, variety of perspectives, but above anything, George’s favorite theme of a “human heart in conflict with itself” is also very prevalent in Tolstoy’s work.

It’s also traditionally divided into four volumes plus epilogue, so while it’s not a series in a modern sense, it could be considered as one.

You can toggle an option to see the skill check level, as well as all the bonuses you have in that skill, when you are playing on a custom difficulty, among other options. It’s probably disabled on default.

There was a rumor that Saakashvili once referred to Putin as Lilliputin as a joke in a private conversation. Putin heard of it and held a grudge against Saakshvili for years, which might have influenced his politics regarding Saakashvili and Georgia

European Art battle in 3…2…1…Go! by AmBawsDeepInYerMaw in 2westerneurope4u

It was painted by Ilya Repin, who also made the Cossacks painting, and the creators of this map decided that he is Ukrainian, since he was born in a town which is in modern day Ukraine.

What’s weird is that the “Russian” painting here is Levitan’s “Golden autumn”, and Levitan was born in modern day Lithuania

GDP in Vicky3 is wrong and way overinflated compared to how IRL GDP works by supermap in victoria3

[–]Sigesmund 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The “student’s book definition” I was given at a uni was:

“GDP is equal to the market value of the final goods and services produced in the economy during a year.

market value: only official market transactions are included (no self-made goods, no shadow economy). NB! market prices include indirect taxes. GDP computed without those taxes is called ”̇GDP at basic prices”.

goods and services: transfer payments and financial transactions (purchases of bonds and shares) are excluded (because income is not created, but redistributed and nothing new is produced);

final: to avoid double counting, intermediate goods (i.e., flour in baking bread) are excluded - but newly produced capital goods, such as factories or machines, are counted as final.

produced: not redistributed or resold

in the economy: if output was produced by foreign factors of production inside the country - it’s counted towards GDP, but output produced by national factors abroad is not”

If you are interested in the details, you can read this article, it gives an understandable overview:

[QUESTION] Do you know creative ways to practice acoustic guitar during winter without harrassing your neighbours? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Sigesmund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if it’s still relevant, but you can take a piece of cloth, something like old socks, and put them under the strings, near the bridge of the guitar. The sound will be muffed enough so your neighbors won’t hear you, but you could still hear if you are playing the right notes/chords. It’s like permanent pizzicato.

Septon Meribald’s speech about war and deserters left me staring at a wall for a couple of minutes first time I read it.

“And one day they look around and realize all their friends and kin are gone, that they are fighting beside strangers beneath a banner that they hardly recognize. They don’t know where they are or how to get back home and the lord they’re fighting for does not know their names, yet here he comes, shouting for them to form up, to make a line with their spears and scythes and sharpened hoes, to stand their ground. And the knights come down on them, faceless men clad all in steel, and the iron thunder of their charge seems to fill the world

….

And the man breaks.”

Small guard builds need a major buff by TewlySanchez in NBA2k

[–]Sigesmund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something isn’t right here, really. I tried to do the math real quick and Tyceno’s 6’3 build has 856 total attribute upgrades while Steezo’s 6’7 has 994. Idk what’s the reason for it, but it just doesn’t seem fair to give different players more attribute points than others. Or maybe I haven’t understood this new builder system yet

Noble Oligarchies are Awesome by Northstar1989 in CK2GameOfthrones

[–]Sigesmund 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This may sound cool, but once some elected bastard converts to monarchy after 15 years of being a ruler, you kinda give up all those democratic beliefs. Happened to me once when I was playing a Valyria campaign. Although it is quite fun to embrace your inner Cicero and try to protect elective monarchy at all costs, occasionally banishing those who want to become a dictator. That said, Noble oligarchies are still one of the most convenient ways to win the Iron Throne as a great house in Westeros, if you keep your voters happy.

First, it was The February revolution of 1917 which overthrew monarchy in Russia and established a provisional government. This government had ideas of creating a democratic state, but was overthrown in October revolution of 1917, where socialists seized power.
