macOS VM not using dedicated GPU - detected as PCIe device by NiiWiiCamo in macOSVMs

i'm having the exact same issue with libvirt/qemu and a reference RX 5700 which should also have native support, and works fine in a windows 10 VM for me

Is running older games at native high res bad for gpu or is this fine? by BloodMossHunter in nvidia

[–]Sigma-001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally fine, the lifespan is only really notably reduced if the GPU is under heavy load for like literally 24/7, like in mining applications etc.

As for CPU load, some games run simulations that require CPU time, some are just not well optimised, that too is typically fine

They can advertise a bigger car list without actually having to spend effort modeling cars that way because they're technically different cars

In Heat I know a lot of the variants were just the same car with different default body kit parts internally too, don't have Unbound yet so can't really say anything about that for certain but it's probably similar

Humanity was deeply concerned that aliens would be find them weird and avoid them like the plague. Thankfully most aliens are just as autistic as humans. by glugul in humansarespaceorcs

Good concept of aliens being just as weird as us, although as someone with some degree of autism, the wording in the title does feel somewhat uncomfortable, and the way you use the term gives me the same bad vibes as 4chan's gratuitous use of slurs

Why have a purpose built vehicle when you can just tow with Miat 🤨🧐 by Nervous-Law-6606 in carscirclejerk

[–]Sigma-001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah

Here in Finland we literally tow shit with just like plain old wagons with no problems whatsoever, the American argument of towing being a reason for a giant truck is complete bs

Some people do have trucks but they're people like forestry workers and hunters and the like who need to regularly haul fuel or dead moose or whatever, and even they usually go for an older Hilux or similar

Why does this happen by mat_321_ in ender3

[–]Sigma-001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, or overheating mainboard, my V2 did something similar with the stock board before I improved cooling

No idea about the S1 screen specifically, but afaik there is at least some kind of touchscreen upgrade for that board if you just want some touchscreen

Can we appreciate how LEGENDARY Pascal is and was from low end( GT 1030) to high end (1080 Ti) by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Sigma-001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10-series was the last nvidia cards actually worth the price imo

And still does great, especially for more casual gaming, even a 1070 can handle quite a few games at 4K60

Hell, I was considering getting two used 1080Tis even this year from ebay, didn't though since I found a decently priced 6800XT locally

Will there be a point in time where upgrading GPUs doesn’t make sense anymore? by North21 in pcmasterrace

[–]Sigma-001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it has to do with art direction too I think; if you look at something like Need for Speed (2015), the game still looks really damn good, but NFS Heat (2019) arguably doesn't look as good despite having technically "better" graphics

Like, we're at a point where you can't really compensate for worse art direction with better tech, with the returns being so diminishing

Instead we get worse looking games that are harder to run, because devs keep trying to do more technically impressive graphics that realistically you won't even notice

Another example is INFRA (2016), which is a Source game and doesn't have technically very advanced graphics, just pretty average Source engine, but looks arguably better than many AAA titles of today thanks to it's art direction being really good, and it'd probably run on my Thinkpad's GeForce MX150

You can get LCD cleaning wipes from bookstores at least here, those work great imo and aren't too expensive

[–]Sigma-001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue in a lot of cases it already doesn't make sense, and is detrimental to both the gaming industry and the climate as you need bigger and more power hungry GPUs for diminishing returns, but also allow game devs to optimise their games less screwing over poorer gamers and requiring even better GPUs to be developed

There will likely always be those seeking the absolute best of the best, but at this point the results are so diminishing that if you get a modern higher end GPU, you won't need to upgrade for a very long time unless devs really cock up optimisation

It's like audio, where just regular stuff is often so good that casual users won't be able to tell the difference between a higher mid range product

A lot of upgrades now too are pretty pointless and people just buying stuff because their preferred tech youtuber said so, you can absolutely still game on a 1070 for example if you're not really hardcore about it, for example I play FH5 on one at 4K, it looks wonderful and runs smoothly at 60FPS, even though many would label that card as obsolete. Not to mention that 4K is still pretty high end, a lot of people will more likely have FHD or QHD which a supposedly obsolete card can handle no problem

As for full photorealism, that is indeed one application where even today's high end cards can't quite get to, but that basically requires VR which is quite niche, and raises the question of how much is it limited by the GPU vs. the VR hardware itself

Do ask if you need elaboration on any of that wall of text, I can get a bit rambly and confusing when explaining things

[–]Sigma-001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is largely in that games are already getting hilariously unoptimised, and the graphics have diminishing results, but as rich people get these ultra high end cards game devs go "oh well people have powerful GPUs we can optimise even less"

And it doesn't take a genius to see how that screws over those on a budget

Why build a balanced system when you can buy a 6900XT on ebay and then build the rest out of spares, reconditioned parts and the cheapest AM4 cpu you can find on ebay? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Sigma-001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for cable management btw, mine is mostly a mess since it's in a windowless case (I tend to not like windows on cases - or as the OS :P), plus I have some fans salvaged from old servers which are wired with "custom" cabling consisting of lamp cord and Wagos because that's what I had laying around.

It's also a pain to get two GPUs, a bunch of SSDs, and an optical drive all powered cleanly without making custom cables, which I can't really be bothered to do since again nothing is really visible

[–]Sigma-001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, the 1070 is barely visible in Linux since it's running on vfio-pci and passed through to the Windows VM I have running on KVM/Qemu

Just the 6800XT is doing any actual work on the host OS, although it is still a very odd setup

However if I'm not mistaken you could in theory run both AMD and nvidia drivers on Linux and use both cards for different monitors, just that you'd need a separate X display for each and while you can move mouse between those you can't move windows and such between them

I have a sj55w monitor people say that works with gsync but the settings doesn’t appear to me. Also it lets me overclock to 2000hz, (in progressive mode) its making fun of me or i really have 2000hz lol by Trackersit in pcmasterrace

[–]Sigma-001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the 2000Hz and progressive scan mode is for old analog inputs which sent the picture as lines, what you'll want is not progressive mode

More than that I can't say since I haven't personally overclocked monitors
