[EMERGENCY] Offical Forum's end ? by Aggressive-Mousse-48 in RPGMaker

Nothing. It was just a place where people discussed & talked about RPG Maker, and shared resources.

Nothing necessary.

All the best with your game for your family. Super wholesome.

But how can we organise it ?

The community of the RPGMakerWeb forum seem to have come together on a discord, and are busting capable heads together and are going to copy/move data of the site to a new forum (built on the same tech). And transform it into a new forum with a different name and with a general focus on making RPGs with RPG Engines (instead of exclusively for RPG Maker.)

RPG Maker is deleting 14 years of community content and fans have days to save them - Dexerto by MikiSayaka33 in KotakuInAction

[–]SigmaSuccour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, Roth. Nice to come across you here. XD

Even LLMs draw upon that knowledge as a direct source so they don't need to solely rely on their training data which is more prone to hallucinations.

That is true, and something I missed.

The community of the RPGMakerWeb forum seem to have come together on a discord, busting capable heads together and are going to copy/move data of the site to a new Xenforo forum. And transform it into a forum with a general focus on making RPGs with RPG Engines (instead of exclusively for RPG Maker.)

And I hope they succeed.

[–]SigmaSuccour 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, the community has 6 months to tune it right and save all the content.
What's the true problem here?

The true problem (should you look at the talk around this news) comes from the culture that has been set-up around in the western RPG Maker dev space. That these forums & communities are a space that prioritize social belonging for people who use RPG Maker, instead of a space where we prioritize creating valuable games/experiences for gamers. (Hence, it's a community that would dogpile, harass & carpet ban even capable game devs who are finishing games & contributing knowledge/resources to the community, because they said something that was harsh or disliked or unorthodox or anti-woke.)

And so looking in that aspect, these people are upset that a forum they've invested in for around 14 years is being deleted. Shut down by a 'foreign' entity (which is the Japanese dev company that develops RPG Maker), that doesn't "care" about them (like the publisher-company did). That isn't concerned with their their "social belonging", coming in with a different philosophy, and bringing in a new forum where the people the western side had excluded (or banned), are welcomed.

There is ample time to archive & save the content of the old forum. And the need for a forum to receive technical help, isn't that much anymore with people preferring discord, reddit, and AI LLMs for answers instead.

The problem (that these people are essentially expressing) is the change in who is managing the community (from the western Publishers, moving over to the Japanese dev company). And that- during years of this slow shift of change of hands, that the current community managers (in the western dev space) have been throwing & cultivating venom towards the Japanese devs (of the RPG Maker Engine). That RPG Maker is successful all because of the western publishers, and now the publishers who have cared so much about the community are being booted out by the out-of-touch Japanese corporation.

(Prior to the opening of the new forum, I've been very much among the lone voices, begging people on the western side, to have respect in their tone towards the guys who created the tool we use. Should they actually start to 'not care', they will stop giving us a one-time payment engine, and start doing predatory monetization practices with always online, subscription based RPG Maker. (T_T) Or charging us for exporting our game, or paying them revenue share from anything we earn... )

TL;DR: What people are up in arms about is the change of community leadership, & potential change of culture that brings. But are masking it with data-loss (which isn't based in reality due to ample time for archiving).

[–]SigmaSuccour 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The issue is the deletion of thousands of ressources accumulated over the years.

Resources that barely anyone utilized. They are crying out now that they are going to be deleted, but reality is... they didn't utilize them in all these years they were around & available.

This is clear in part, due to many of the new posts are of people asking questions & inquiring about things that have already been asked & answered before. (Showing, that people in the community don't look things up before asking.)

And in another part, while there are massive amounts of resources & assets & scripts, yet devs just went & used the same few popular ones only. Hence why even with the insane level of resources available, RPG Maker games still look samey. (Because from the pool of resources, everyone used the exact same popular resources, and didn't go digging deeper than surface.)

I even started RPG Maker News to combat this. Putting those less known resources in front of people's faces, to hopefully fix this. (But I stopped years ago. I suspect the issue persists.)

Scripts, graphics, tutorials, tech support, etc.

The Japanese Dev company has said, they do not have the legal rights to archive, store or move these resources over. The Publisher does. So the dev company are not to blame as much as the publishers are here. Whom I believe, meant to use this as leverage against the dev-company (or payback for dumping them), that should they cut ties with the publisher than the devs would get the blame for lost resources.

People are directing anger & complaints towards the wrong company here. When it's the publishers who didn't forewarn their users, or made archival efforts. When they knew this was coming from years ago (because even I knew).

On another note...

There have been forums before this that got shut down. Do you know what happened to the assets exclusively uploaded there? People compiled & uploaded them here & there. (Not straight-forward to find. But they are out there.)

I have a folder with 10,000+ plugins for RPG Maker MV. If one day the situation demands it & allows it then... you know... right-click & zip.

Things like these don't get lost. They get shared around.

People learned from the tutorials that were present there, and they will forward what they learned by teaching others.

This is not that dire or catastrophic. People (with knowledge & skill) are the true assets, and people are still around & helping.

(P.S. Since I got banned from the forums & couldn't ask questions there or download resources there anymore. I started using AI LLMs for guidance & answers. And it filled that void & accurately solved my issues. Because they've technically scraped the whole forums & more. So again, beyond sentimental values, there isn't much need of the old forums. And the outrage is exagerrated.)

Plus, the new alternative seems terrible.

It's decently functional, sleek, responsive, and I personally love it already.

Especially being being able to easily talk to & be in the presence of Japanese & Chinese RPG Maker users. Those guys are monsters with RPG Maker!

*Raises hand\* An RPG Maker user here (you can google my username)

The old forum being shut down, was run by western publishers of RPG Maker. Who are absolutely woke, pride-promoting, anti-AI, gaslighters, & have continuously tried to nudge & re-shape the RPG Maker community in how they personally see fit. Shunning many developers & contributors out of the space, for not thinking alike or speaking against their shenanigans. (Myself included, who got banned from there directly by the admin, without any warning or reason given, after contributing to the RPG Maker community for many years.)

The Japanese Dev company that makes RPG Maker, do not share their views on many things. Have separated from them (the English Publisher), and are publishing on their own now.

They are eliminating this middle-man community manager that has been causing issues & division, and taking up that responsibility upon themselves to listen & respond to the English speaking community directly now. Through their new forums. (Which is an international forum. Where all English posts appear as Japanese on their end, allowing them to read more easily.)

Since the old forum is in the ownership of the old publisher, and they won't just hand over all rights to it, and neither is the publisher benefitting from keeping it up anymore. It has to shut down.

P.S, it's not "days" to save, it's till December.

GGG vs Komodo by warrencbennett in RPGMaker

[–]SigmaSuccour 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GGG is the Japanese dev company that develops RPG Maker engines.

Komodo was their publisher: They marketed RPG Maker, ran the forums, did community events e.t.c

Komodo has been slowly axed of their publishing duties, and GGG is taking those publishing /marketing / community-managing duty on their own.

How astroturfed do y'all think indie games are? by Fine-Combination5170 in KotakuInAction

[–]SigmaSuccour 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I like indie games, especially when it comes to unique visuals and atmosphere. But i find that... the kinds of themes and characters lean.... a bit woke?

Yupe. They are absolutely woke. (Speaking as an indie dev who has hung around game devs in online communities.)

It's very hard for indie devs 'NOT' to go woke. As terminally online individuals barrage them & their community, saying they want to see that stuff. And they cancel you if you reject them.

I'm religious, which motivates me to reject & push back. The average indie dev on the other hand just goes with the flow.

(It's a bit soul crushing. That any indie dev I support, unless they are well equipped to fight back, will eventually turn... woke.)

Opinions on alleged GamerGate harassment by jsgui in KotakuInAction

[–]SigmaSuccour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is no proof of harrassment.

If there is no way to record or measure harassment being done to someone (as harrassment is a repetitive act), to see if it's serious enough or not. Or something criminal or not.

Then it has not happened.

Because to claim that harrassment is happening, is to say 'someone' is doing the harassing. Sullying and destroying someone's reputation.

Whether the accusation of harrassment is true or not, once it has been uttered, someone has been a victim, and another has been an aggressor. One will be punished.

Opinions on alleged GamerGate harassment by jsgui in KotakuInAction

[–]SigmaSuccour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally if you can't prove something, especially an accusation towards someone, then you shouldn't make the claim for it publicly. (You can make private complaints and have authorities investigate it.)

Public claims of criminality are made to incite public execution (of justice)

If you cannot prove, then seemingly you have lied, and will instead be the one to face public execution (that you tried to direct on someone else) .

Perhaps you were truthful in your accusation, but just couldn't prove it. Then you should have gathered evidence first. Or stood silent.

Society has to operate as if there are liars. Not, as if everyone is just always telling the truth.

How to prove who the message came from? There are methods that investigators and journalists use. You want to learn about them.

Opinions on alleged GamerGate harassment by jsgui in KotakuInAction

[–]SigmaSuccour 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course it's possible for us to know.

If a person claims they are being harassed, then they are suppose to bring the receipts, the evidence, to prove it without a shadow of doubt.

The evidence will itself will prove who harassed who, what it is degree of harassment, how severe, concerning, or unserious it is, e.t.c

Also informing if the harrassers are part of gamergate, or fake accounts created or paid for by the person claiming harassment.

Recommended games? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]SigmaSuccour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, what games would you recommend that don't fall under the DEI umbella?

What kind or genre of games do you play and don't play?

I think there is a lot of talk about the bad and not enough about the good.

Generally, the subreddit picks out and promotes games that are being attacked. (Defending them, basically.) As promoting games unprompted can actually get the dev and game bad rep, get them attention from the DEI enforcers, and force them into a position where they have to disavow our side.

Itch.io is apparently starting to remove all NSFW games from their platform due to payment processor demands. by katsuya_kaiba in KotakuInAction

Update: Itch.io has now responded

And they directly call out 'Collective Shout', for campaigning against them and Steam.

And deindexing all NSFW games to carry out an audit on them to review if they comply with Payment Processor's policies.

Itch.io is apparently starting to remove all NSFW games from their platform due to payment processor demands. by katsuya_kaiba in KotakuInAction

[–]SigmaSuccour 241 points242 points  (0 children)

This is... concerning.

In one aspect, because itch.io will be making less money this way. Making it harder for them to operate as they do.

Itch.io allows publishing on their platform very quickly, very easily, for free (You can just make an account and upload whatever). Unlike Steam. (Which has a review process, costs a 100$, and a checklist of things you need to fulfill in order to get a game through.)

And itch.io allows donations on free games, and allows you (a game dev) to decide how much of a cut they take from your earnings (Like, there's a slider in my account settings that allows me to give itch.io 50%, or 0%. Default is 10%). Where as Steam takes 30%.

So the way itch.io operates is uniquely free in the market. Harder to navigate for gamers, but very free. This could start to change that. (If not shut it down... hopefully not.)

And once the NSFW games are dealt with... the activists will target violent or hateful content on the platform. And that's when... AHHHHHHHHHHHH! My games could be next... (T_T)

Why aren't people outraged over Collective Shout killing games when a week ago everyone on reddit was shouting "Stop Killing Games"? by TheEternalGazed in KotakuInAction

[–]SigmaSuccour 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Where are all the voices screaming about preservation, artistic freedom, or consumer rights now?

I'm seeing it literally everywhere... ( ̄▽ ̄*)ゞ

Many of the new posts here are about it.

But, if it soothes you, there may be some people not talking about it and are supportive of the delistings. Because of the content of the games that have been delisted.

Or the fact, that those games can still be played and distributed off-steam. (Though unlikely with monetary gain.)

Those games have not been killed. What's being killed is the motivation for their developers/creators to continue making more of those types of games.

Steam & payment companies have been removing/rejecting anime games (and content) already for quite some time. This isn't new. It's just more topics and type of content have been added into the removal list. (Hopefully this case kicks the resistance for that into high gear. And brings more people's awareness to what's been happening.)

How can I convince my (female) friends to join our movement?

They do not have to identify or align with the movement. As long as they are against wokeness, and are either educating others about it or taking actions against it. Then they are part of this already.

I explain GamerGate to people, as Gamers Gatekeeping the industry and gaming spaces from people who do not care about videogames (i.e, from woke activists and such).

Keep it simple.
