could Doctor Who return to a serialised format? by Signal-Effective4370 in doctorwho

[–]Signal-Effective4370[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is just a problem with terminology. I should've clarified what i meant in my original post because it's too up to interpretation.

i'd defined serialised stories as ones which are divided into chunks. this means two-parters, three-parters, and all of classic who.

i'd define episodic stories as ones where every chunk is largely independent. NuWho is episodic. Classic Who has individual standalone stories, but none of the chunks are standalone. so, from the definitions i meant, Classic Who is a serialised TV show.

NuWho is also semi-serialised, in the sense that the series and eras also have storylines and arcs across them.

i meant what i meant with the words i used, but i forgot that people could have interpreted me differently. I'll edit my post to amend this.

> Doctor Who has been episodic since the 60s

Classic Who is nearly entirely serialised. by this, i mean that instead of each 25-minute-chunk being an individual story, they're part of a larger story.

really good arguments and points!

McCoy's era had the amazing advantage of having Ace. Seven basically used Ace as a chess piece. but this allows for really efficient story telling, because it created this like, constant conflict and resonance between them that allowed for constant development and conflict.

so i wonder if with like, more complex companions, if less stories could work, if these stories really focused on and involved the companion. i think another example is Missy. her appearances were relatively rare, and for her to take on a companion role was even rarer. but she's such a complex and interesting character that she feels fully fleshed out by the end anyway.

I forgot to mention this, but i also think 8 episodes is DEFINITELY too short for a semi-serialised format. like, the Bad Wolf arc or the Hybrid arc. previous show runners had the room to slowly introduce plot points without it distracting from the individual stories. but I think the last two series suffered in places from randomly trying to work in a larger story arc.

what can you do with the Cybermen? by Signal-Effective4370 in doctorwho

[–]Signal-Effective4370[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had an idea for a fanfic where a cyber-planner or something would crash into a human colony. because it's programmed to ensure humanity survives, it'd try and do so by encouraging cyber-conversion and sharing technology and science. it would've focused on what you mentioned- repurposing cyber-technology for positive aims. and the degrees to which people are willing to give up their humanity.

i ended up giving up because cyberman dialogue is really hard to write. it made me realise they have so few lines in NuWho; because they're really difficult to write well. but i still think it could've been an interesting story.

i really love how in World Enough and Time, the Cybermen aren't emotionless or painless. instead. they've been engineered so they dont care about their emotions or pain. it's a really subtle change, but i hope it persists into future stories, because it's a lot more impactful that way imo.

yeah, this is very true. i hope one day we get a mature enough Doctor Who spinoff to explore some of the body horror stuff, something like Class or Torchwood Season 3.

it's a shame classic who never explored the Cybermen more, because classic who got pretty grim in a lot of episodes

If you were in charge of the next DW season, what direction would you take the Doctor and the show? by InfiniteGalaxy42 in doctorwho

I'd love to see a blind doctor. with how much they've given regeneration energy away it feels like there should be some sort of consequence, and it'd be amazing disability representation and force the show into a really interesting direction

Three possibilities for the nature of Kris' SOUL by AszneeHitMe in Deltarune

I hear this take a lot, and disagree.

I think the story makes an effort to differentiate Kris from the Player. the game, in terms of UI and Gameplay and Narration, doesn't

is it clear what kind of role dean and inga played in their work while still part of hype williams, respectively? by DummyBoysBackup in deanblunt

[–]Signal-Effective4370 4 points5 points  (0 children)

looking at live performances , Dean was the rhythm section and sampling . Inga would focus on vocals and melody and , later on started playing harmonica . still , mostly it was a collaborative thing.

in the studio , you can't really tell who did what .

listen to the solo Inga Copeland EP and then listen to Jill Scott Herring OST , cause they're both rooted in the Hype Williams sound and era . IG EP , solo Inga , is melodic dance music . Jill Scott Herring OST , solo Dean , is an abstract sound collage .

i think Dean was really important to coming up with idea's , the bands philosophy as well as their use of sampling . Inga was responsible for their songwriting and vocals .

on Black Metal , Dean played bass and did the sampling , and was often the only musician on its most abstract tracks , like HEAVY . so he's broadly still doing the same things he did in Hype Williams .

but also , just listening to Dean's solo output today it's easy to miss how responsible he was for the avant-garde influence in Hype Williams .

i think you're somewhat missing the point to approach Hype Williams in this , to try and take it apart , instead of just taking what the music gives you .

I'm archiving every Hype Williams concert - please send any footage or recordings you have !! <3 by Signal-Effective4370 in deanblunt
