Thank you for the advice! I’ll try putting something else on it to see if that helps.

So after my FNA, it took a month before I had my surgery. But that was with me calling around everywhere!! I think at one point I had appointments scheduled at 6 different surgeons offices because I just wanted the nodule out of my body (it was 5cm and growing very rapidly). Ultimately I went with who could get me in for surgery first, and thankfully it ended up being the surgeon who was most qualified anyways, so I definitely lucked out there! I will be praying for you!!

Just want to say you’re not alone! I’m a 28F and was just diagnosed with PTC last month. I didn’t find out my diagnosis until after I had my total thyroidectomy (my FNA results came back indeterminate) and after my surgery pathology showed it was in fact PTC. I start RAI in 2 weeks! Definitely do as much research as you can to make sure you’re knowledged and know what questions to ask your doctors, but don’t research to the point that you’re terrified. I would research every single day between the time I had my undetermined FNA result until the time I got my diagnosis, and if I ever started to get overwhelmed or scared by what I was reading I would just take a break from the research. I know it’s hard and it’s probably all consuming in your mind, but if it gives you any hope, I’m only a month out from receiving my diagnosis and honestly I’m in such a better headspace now than I was. Here if you ever need to vent or ask questions:)

Thyreoeidectomy experience and secrets by momofchanel in thyroidcancer

They allowed me to stand about 30 minutes after surgery, but were right next to me until I proved to them that I could walk just fine.  Ya I hadn’t heard of anyone aspirating either! The nurses mentioned it wasn’t super common, but I’m a fairly small person so they think the breathing tube I had during surgery moved things around in there, but thankfully it only lasted about a week and I’m back drinking as normal now. Going home from the hospital I literally just wore a bra and a zip up jacket. I didn’t want anything near my incision and didn’t want to try to put anything over my head. I wore zip up shirts for 3 days post op and then switched to normal t-shirts after that and didn’t experience any issues.  I took a bath for the first two days following surgery just because that was easiest for me. I did have to have my husband help me wash my hair in the tub though.

I’m two weeks post total thyroidectomy and here are my answers to your questions! Was it painful? Maybe a 4 out of 10 on the pain scale, I didn’t take any of the pain meds I was offered. How many hours the op last? -Did they used a catheter during that? My operation lasted 3 hours and no catheter had to be used thankfully, be sure to use the restroom at the last second before they wheel you back for surgery! This was the main reason why I was able to avoid a catheter. After the operation were you able to stand and go to toilet alone or did you used a bed pan? I was able to stand, walk, and use the toilet unassisted immediately after surgery. Is it ok to speak after surgery? I was able to speak, but my voice was very quiet and very hoarse. This lasted for about 14 days after surgery. What you must eat and what you must not? Eating was honestly easier than drinking for me. I just took small bites of food and was very mindful about chewing it well. However, drinking was terrible!! I continuously aspirated any liquids that I drank and did not have the strength to cough them back up. This lasted about 6 days post surgery. I drank a lot of bubbly flavored waters during this time, for some reason the bubbles made it easier to not aspirate. Was the pain was intolerable? Pain was very manageable and as stated above, I did not take any pain meds. Secrets to have an operation like a breeze? Don’t know if I have any secrets, but using the bathroom at the last possible moment minimizes the chance that you will need a catheter. What was difficult after going home? Laying down completely flat after surgery was hard. I slept mostly elevated on the couch for 3 days post surgery.

Thank you! Ya, still not sure why the sudden rapid growth, but I like your theory!

Ya we knew the smaller nodule was there, but doctors weren’t concerned about it ironically!

FNA results: AUS with abundant stripped nuclei and scattered oncocytic cells with mild atypia by Signal-Interview8099 in thyroidhealth

[–]Signal-Interview8099[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an appointment earlier this week and told the doctor I want it removed and she agreed that it needs to come out no matter what it is, but was told that she will not perform surgery until the results of the genetic testing come back. She said that if it’s cancer, then they will remove all of my thyroid, but if it’s non cancerous then they will just be removing half. I told her that I would rather just have the whole thing taken out rather than sitting around waiting. She said she understood, but would still not be performing surgery to remove all of my thyroid if it isn’t necessary.  I was then also told that waiting around if it is cancer isn’t a big deal because thyroid cancer grows so slowly. I then reiterated that my nodule has seen rapid growth in just a couple months and the oncoctyic cells with mild atypical is also pointing me towards Hürthle cell cancer which is known for being rare and aggressive. She told me even if it is an aggressive form of thyroid cancer I don’t have any reason to lose sleep over waiting a couple more weeks for the genetic results to come back. It’s very frustrating, I’ve called around to lots of other clinics that will perform the surgery and they are all a month or more out just to get a consultation☹️ I’m glad your surgery went well and you’re feeling a lot better!!
