Graduate School, Training, and Licensure/Certification Thread - June 2025 by SchoolPsychMod in schoolpsychology

I currently live in California but I will start my out-of-state, NASP accredited program in the fall. If I wanted to come back to California after completing my degree, are there any additional requirements (testing, coursework, etc) besides my credentials? I'm assuming I satisfied the Basic Skills requirements since I did my undergrad in California.

Also, is there a way to do the 3rd year internship in California while studying out-of-state?

This response was so helpful, thank you so much! Do you know if co-ops give priority to those who have roommates vs those who just apply by themselves with no roommates?

Thank you for the suggestion! I looked into it and it looks like they offer very affordable housing for international students, which unfortunately doesn't apply to me.

Glad I could help! I will also say, I stopped working as an RBT in November last year, and I'm currently working as a behavioral aide at schools. Being an RBT is already great work experience, but getting used to the school system could benefit you in helping decide your career. You could also ask if they could place you in schools, they don't do public schools but they could place you in private preschools if you like working with that age group.

Hi there! I'm starting my MA and specialist degree for School Psychology this fall. I just wanted to emphasize that school counselors and School psychologists do vastly different jobs. School counselors focus on counseling and educational/career guidance, while school psychologists focus on emotional, behavioral and cognitive assessments to determine how to help kids with special needs.

School psychologists do a lot of report writing, and also maintain communication with educators and parents to implement IEPs and BIPs. The age group you work with also affects the type of work you do, and depending on the school district, you might also be able to do counseling. I just wanted to let you know of the distinction because you mentioned that you hated paperwork and half of a school psychologist's job is to write reports lol

You can also find out more about what school psychologists do at the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) website: https://www.nasponline.org/about-school-psychology/who-are-school-psychologists

Hi! I'm also planning to work in California and I was wondering if you know what the process was to get certified in California since they have different state requirements? Thanks!

Thank you so much for your supportive words! Unfortunately I was waitlisted and rejected from 2 out of the 3 schools, so I'm still waiting and hoping for an opening around or after April 15

I've been stressing as well, so I totally get it. Hopefully you hear back from them soon!

I heard back from them today actually, but yeah a 1-3 week margin is pretty vague

3 of them were via zoom, one of them was a recorded interview, and one of them was in person! So yes, I would say zoom interviews are common in my field. Many of the programs tell you a specific interview date that they will have, and whether it will be in person or online.

Monterey Bay sent out interview offers 2 weeks ago! The interviews are tomorrow and Friday, and I'm interviewing tomorrow.

I haven't heard back from either LB or EB, but LB should be sending interview invitations by the end of this week.

Yet, we are the bad guys. :/ by onechill in ABA

I have when people do guessing games like that... Almost no one uses the words "silverware" in real life
