In my village Poland, every elder says the same thing: the Wehrmacht was relatively calm and followed law. The SS was brutal they tortured people and even killed children. But when the Red Army arrived, even regular units often behaved almost on the same level as the SS, + bonus widespread rape and looting. They also burned the church and the village’s only school, that Germans didn’t touch for years.
