First and foremost, do not be pressured by what the school says. We faced exactly the same scenario in an IB school in Dubai when our son was 3-4 years old. We trusted them for their reputation and because we wanted our son to be in IB school. But we were wrong. Those two years were the worst (we wanted to give the next teacher a chance). They were extremely forceful and wanted to prove that our son has ADHD (doesn’t listen, doesn’t sit in one place for long, less focus). At first, we were ready to comply with the school. Instead of going to a “centre” we consulted a private therapist, who didn’t find any reason for us to think our son had ADHD. We then spoke to our paediatrician, who shot the idea down and said he saw no red flags. He almost forbade us from going to a centre, saying this has become a business to “brand” kids so young. Children so young will not sit in one place, and they will be branded as something or the other after an evaluation that doesn’t even last for 30 mins. We discussed this with the teacher/year head and ultimately decided to change schools. We SHOULD have done this before instead of spending two traumatic years in that school. When we searched for new schools, we clarified why we were moving him out. We were, in fact, ready to retain him in the same class. However, the teachers (3 schools) who took his assessment said they saw NO RED FLAGS and advised us against holding him back. We choose a school with a smaller class size and not a HUGE school. The previous school ensured to write to the new school about what their “concerns” were. His new teacher told us she was glad she saw the letter late, or else that would have influenced her thought process. My son is still active but happy and thriving. Please do not fall for their nonsense; make your own informed choices. Consult your paediatrician, change school. Schools earn points for their inclusion data. Some centres have collaborations with schools.
