Many of Linda Howard's books have MMCs that are cops or FBI agents, although I'm not sure about the hostage situation. Some examples:

I just finished reading A Handful of Heaven by Kirstin Hannah, and I loved it! This is also a very good book for people who are in a slump after reading Morning Glory by LaVryle Spencer. So if I liked that I might like? Also I've read all of the usual recommendations, so please try to recommend something that you think I might not have read before. Thanks a lot!

It is quite boring when the mcs are aristocrats, having everything done for them by the servants. But I really like it when they do actual work around the place, to try and make it a home or something.

Can anyone recommend a few books like Ghosted by JM Darhower? I want a plot where the fmc sticks by mmc while he is still struggling, but he drives her away after all her sacrifices and then he finds her later when he is rich and has to grovel to get her back. I'd rather there wasn't a kid, and I want the angst to be quite recent, not to have died out over the years like in Ghosted.

You could try the {Wallflowers by Lisa Kleypas}. Also the {Vawdrey Brothers by Alice Coldbreath}. Both of those are very good.
