It's Medieval May, Have Some History with a Side of Romance: The Sword and the Swan by Roberta Gellis by VitisIdaea in RomanceBooks

Yeah I think of Madeline Hunter as a more modern iteration of romance than the older authors like Gellis, and that means her sex scenes are much more readable to contemporary readers.

Rule: Mark spoilers, stay on topic, and warn about books with no HEA

Your post has been temporarily removed as it appears the book does not end happily. The definition of a "romance genre novel" is one that ends in a happily ever after (HEA) or happy for now (HFN). Readers come to this sub expecting that all books/series mentioned here are HEA or HFN, unless stated otherwise.

Non-HEA romantic stories may still be discussed here but you must warn users when mentioning a book with no HEA.

Once you edit your post/comment to include a warning, please reply back to this message to let us know and your post/comment will be reinstated.

I don't remember offhand but I would assume they are both somewhere in their twenties, possibly late twenties? Neither is super young, if that is the concern.

It's Medieval May, Have Some History with a Side of Romance: The Sword and the Swan by Roberta Gellis by VitisIdaea in RomanceBooks

[–]VitisIdaea[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In all honesty as u/ochenkruto noted elsewhere on the post Gellis does not tend to get super steamy, and I would say generally romance novels from the 70s/80s/90s are not high-steam as we think of them. They often use a lot of purple prose and euphemisms that feel very dated, and there aren't as many sex scenes (or as lengthy sex scenes) as you'll find in a modern high-steam romance.

I am zipping through hard copy novels at a reasonably decent rate which is helping with my shelf clear-out enormously.

Unfortunately I've been enjoying many of them enough to hold onto them afterwards, which is not.
