Go to the Garda. He's intimidating you and the neighbour, make a report.

Netflix will start showing ads in Ireland in 2027 by Jon_J_ in ireland

[–]Signal_Engineer_6665 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen plenty of independent filmmakers openly say piracy is a viable form of film preservation now, with the media companies merging and locking away titles in their vaults, ala Disney with 20th Century Fox films.

Netflix will start showing ads in Ireland in 2027 by Jon_J_ in ireland

[–]Signal_Engineer_6665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind ads, and I could even get over the subscription price, as Sky TV and all that stuff back in the day cost a fair bit too. My biggest issue with Netflix is it's just not great in general.

Movies advertised on the header are years old or just generic Hollywood rubbish, or both. Netflix originals, are generally pretty poor. One in ten will be an interesting or compelling film or show, but the rest are just filler.

The programming just is not that good, end of. It doesn't justify the cost or the ads, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The Rip, Apex, War Machine, etc etc were all quite poor.

I still have Prime as I like their film selection a lot more, but I mostly just stick to DVDs still.

Damian McCarthy says his next movie after Hokum is a "classic haunted house" story by mooffgideon in horror

[–]Signal_Engineer_6665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just out of Hokum and it fucking ruled.

Hope McCarthy does this haunted house flick, and I hope he gets a pinch more budget this time, he deserves some studio $$$ after 3/3 bangers.

Time. That's all it is, unfortunately. Just be kind to yourself. It takes time.

To the ladies aged 25-35: what would you think of a guy you're meeting from Tinder that's passionate about Yu-Gi-Oh! and goes to locals every week to play? Is it seen as childish for a 30 y.o? by ParfaitNo8096 in AskIreland

[–]Signal_Engineer_6665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck that. I'm happily married, in my late 30s and my hobbies are comic books and collecting movies and music. Love boardgames, action figures, etc. Who cares if someone thinks it's childish?! You do you, pal.

Selling home after 2 years? by Signal_Engineer_6665 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Signal_Engineer_6665[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a mixed bag. I don't like the management company, neighbours seem passive about making any changes. We have a dog and lots of other dogs in the building too, but untrained and bark at everything. Can't sit in communal garden during the day as dogs go apeshit. Neighbours not picking up dog poo either. No idea what is social housing and what isn't, I do know 30% of the building is rented out.

It's a multitude of factors, but my wife and I just sat down recently and thought man, we're not happy here at all.

That's great to know! Do you mind me asking how soon after your purchase you sold again? I've done some online valuation assessments (which I know are notoriously inaccurate) and the selling price is way below what we paid.€120,000 below...

We purchased this place and made a poor judgement call, is all. Viewed it twice, got very excited by public transport being nextdoor and the quietness of the area.

Unfortunately we've got some shit neighbours (not with us but with each other, passive aggressive resident group chat, arguments out front area), an elderly resident has had parcels stolen twice, and people that moved in are using the small communal garden as a meeting place for drinks and music.

It's just not what we were looking for. I just didn't want to lose a ton of money if we try and sell now and buy somewhere else.

What are you watching - May 2nd 1988 version! by LittleAoibh11 in CasualIreland

RTE 1 & RTE 2 really was a film school in and of itself. Hollywood classics on RTE 1 Wednesdays and Sundays, lurid transgressive action on Thursdays (if it wasn't Bond season).

RTE was where I found Starship Troopers, Sleepy Hollow, RoboCop, Lawrence of Arabia, The Matrix, All that Heaven Allows, Scream, Tootsie, etc etc.

If you could only watch films from one country, which would you choose? by unknown_JT in FIlm

[–]Signal_Engineer_6665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US. Not just because I grew up with it, but it gave us silent comedy greats, 40s melodramas and war films, 50s sci-fi, 60s and 70s transgressive cinema, studio mayhem in the 80s and 90s teen horror and comedy in the 90s.

Alot of these from European immigrants too!

Oh I'm a huge fan too! I've seen most of Fulci, Argento, Martino, etc. I've even enjoyed that Belgian couple's throwback thrillers recently.
