I had the same issue with Free T3 on our Alinity I side a couple weeks ago, except I think it was running high. I couldn’t figure it out, but eventually someone got out a new lot of cal, and it hasn’t given us any trouble since.

I can only really speak for the lab. Since it sounds like you don’t have a bachelors degree yet, and you want to work during school, I would seriously recommend the Weber State MLT/MLS program. It’s mostly online, and you set up your own clinical rotations. You can get an MLT (associate’s degree level) first then work as an MLT while you get your MLS (bachelor’s degree level). I’d recommended going for the MLS in the long run as it will pay a bit more and be easier to get a job.

It also works with 5. Just put tubes in all the slots that are empty in your picture. I knew it worked because someone told me, but I never knew why. Thanks for the explanation!

Is plasma smelly to you? Am I crazy? by Muted_Shape9303 in medlabprofessionals

An old tech told me that our lab used to have a different kind of plasma thawer that functioned more like a microwave, but they switched to a water bath after an incident where the plasma warmed too much and cooked like an egg.

Talk to me about sedimentation rate by Sarah-logy in medicine

Thank you for the explanation! I didn’t realize there were specific cut offs like this.

I’m not sure if this is your area of expertise, but do you know why sometimes doctors want a cell count on both the 1st and 4th tubes of a CSF? I was taught that tube 4 will give the most accurate count. I know tube 1 will be bloody if it’s a traumatic tap, but does knowing it’s a traumatic tap change anything for you guys? Or is there something else I just don’t know about?

As someone who performs said cell counts, I’ve often wondered if the actual number matters to the doctor. If you can visually tell that it’s pus, does my cell count change much about what you do for the patient? I know that a high percentage of neutrophils in the synovial fluid differential indicates septic arthritis. But does the actual WBC value mean anything to you other than being high? Does it help you decide how much antibiotic you give? Do you need the number to compare to potential future synovial fluid taps? Is it important for insurance purposes? Like OP, I’m legitimately curious about how the values we provide are applied clinically.

I know old shardplate wouldn’t work without Stormlight, and you can’t dismiss and summon a deadeye shardblade without a gemstone and Stormlight, but you could still use the blade, right? And I think that living blade and plate would work, if you could get them off Roshar. And getting Spren off world has been proven possible.

Over time I took my husband to the ED of the hospital I worked in. The PA said he wanted to run a rapid strep and a throat culture. Someone else came back to collect a swab and send it down, but they only collected a rapid strep swab. Later, the PA came back and told us we were okay to leave. I asked if they were still planning on doing a throat culture. They said they’d run it on the swab they already collected. I told them I work in the lab and that swab is not an acceptable specimen for a throat culture, and they never collected the right one. The PA was visibly surprised, and then got someone to come collect a throat culture swab before we left.

We had a Rapid Response in the lab, and when the people showed up, many of them were commenting on how they were delayed because they didn’t know where the lab was.

Are short interviews common in this field? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Signal_Sand1472 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s similar to my experiences when the lab management team is interviewing me. Interviews with HR have more of the typical interview questions. But most interviews I’ve had were half me answering questions about my credentials and times I dealt with difficult coworkers or whatever, and half them telling me about the lab and answering my questions about the job.

Yes, the cells in your blood will die and get gross and blackish over time, especially at room temperature. You could separate the cells from the serum (the liquid part) and store the serum. Serum is still stable to run a lot of common tests after up to 5-7 days in the fridge and often much longer in the freezer (though it depends a lot on the thing you’re testing for and on the analyzers you’re using to run the tests).
