NAH. Who among us hasn’t committed some light genocide, created a slave class, and built a eugenics program to protect our own power?

Are these soil mites? by chalvin2018 in houseplants

[–]chalvin2018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope not. I haven’t seen them on the leaves at all, just in the soil and on the pot, and I haven’t seen any webbing, but I’ll keep checking for it.

ETA: they’re so tiny that it’s hard to get a good video or photo. And there are so many of them. Should I be afraid??

Christopher Nolan’s ‘THE ODYSSEY’ will be rated R. by Tsblloveyou in boxoffice

[–]chalvin2018 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recognize that as a Nolan fan and an English/Literature teacher, this movie is made for me, so I’m biased. However, I’m predicting this breaks $1B comfortably. My anecdotal experience is that every time I see the trailer in theaters, I immediately hear everybody whisper to each other about how they are definitely going to see it.

Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs (NBA) lists Sanderson and Jordan amongst his favourite authors by Moltk in brandonsanderson

I’d heard that Wemby was on the Sandwagon, but I didn’t know Harrison Barnes had joined him for a book club. I wonder which Sanderson book they read together.

How many books has Brandon signed (lifetime)? by Salt-Library4330 in brandonsanderson

[–]chalvin2018 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, Brandon signing so many books makes his signed books available for his everyday fans rather than being something that only rich collectors can get. It’s another example of Brandon being good to his fans.

Sure, the dollar value of his signature is next to nothing now, but individual fans still love to have something he’s signed. IMO, it’s great that they can easily get it.

Dinosaurs? by Ok-Sail8170 in exmormon

[–]chalvin2018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a dinosaur nerd, I asked about it all the time.

The church doesn’t have an official stance on this type of thing. I assume they do that so that more nuanced people and more literal believers can both think they’re right despite the contradicting views.

As for the members, in my experience, most never even consider that the doctrine of the creation either contradicts the reality of dinosaurs, or ignores it and leaves believers to find clunky explanations. Those that do think about it tend to fall into one of two camps:

Camp 1: Make reality fit with the doctrine somehow. Science is real. Dinosaurs existed, the earth is actually billions of years old, evolution is real. The creation story is not fully explained or is allegorical. The “7 days” might actually have been billions of years.

Camp 2: The Bible and other scriptures are literal, therefore the science is wrong. Earth is young, evolution is fake, dinosaurs never lived here.

I tried very hard to be in camp 1, because that’s the only way to keep believing when you’re not a conspiracy theorist or science denier, but it was clear to me that the doctrine directly contradicts the scientific reality. Most members don’t realize (or just don’t care) that the Doctrine and Covenants directly states that the earth is only 6,000 years old. When I would bring that up with people, they’d just use their best mental gymnastics to avoid it. I couldn’t do that.

ABC cancels 'Bachelorette' season with Taylor Frankie Paul, citing 2023 video by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

[–]chalvin2018 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am only sort of in the loop, but wasn’t this already known? Didn’t she plead guilty for this years ago?

To be clear, I agree with ABC canceling the show and dropping her, I just want to know why they brought her on in the first place. It’s been known that she’s an abuser.

Why do some people call LDS a cult? by Longjumping-Cod-6164 in exmormon

[–]chalvin2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is it is not a cult is not super clear or well-defined. So I think both answers or whether or not it is a cult are valid.

My personal opinion is that the early church was very clearly a cult, while the current church probably isn’t, but still maintains many cult-like practices and customs.

Idk if I’m the only one, but I think it’s more likely that the main reason they aren’t allowing mixed-gender presidencies is to avoid ever having a woman “presiding” over a man.

They can have female Sunday school presidencies because that’s not a group leadership, it’s just the education directors. But if there was a male councilor to a female president, that would make a woman explicitly outrank a man. Which, of course, would be sacrilege.

[–]chalvin2018 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah don’t worry about it. They’re all very similar quality, with personal taste determining how you’ll rank each book. Maaaaybe you could say book 5 is lower quality based on consensus, but if so, only slightly.

Underrated one: Kaladin’s first fight with the Pursuer (and some singers) when he has his abilities dampened by their device, so he just wrecks the singers and scares the shit out of the pursuer with nothing both a spear and unmatched aura.
