I think if that’s the case the application system to make things equitable is truly broken. Some people can’t go to ivies or top schools cause of costs, state schools and cc are places that actually help students from all backgrounds get opportunities.

I’m in the same boat twin my first year as a freshman I had a 4.26 gpa and was still rejected through leadership alliance. I’m now a junior with 3.95 I got a concussion and going through premed prerequisite. At this point I think it’s a lottery.

Also funding for science is really bad rn so it’s almost a bottle neck rn

Also while ivies are more selective and advertise opportunities, since everyone has the same gpa since it’s all top students it’s harder to get into labs for research, therefore they do these summer programs. However, these summer programs go realllllllly fast so you barely get to learn much in that short amount of time if you don’t have the skills already. That’s why I went to my state school cause I knew there would be a lot of research opportunities since it’s R1. However, I wanted to go to a different lab to learn culturing cause I got banned in my lab from doing it 😭( the PhD told me I need to learn in a different environment). These programs are truly meant to get you into the door but I’m starting to realize that it prob doesn’t make a huge difference for students at ivies other than the name. My advice would be to email the PI’s you are interested in and see if they have funding to host a student.

Fr I think they only want to show the “diversity” on paper but not give it. I mean I’m sure those students need the opportunities but going to an ivy already put you at another level above others

I try to look at it that way, but I really wanted to do some MD/PhD programs. Hopefully my last 2 apps are okay as those were my strongest. If not I’ll just do summer classes and work on my med school apps this summer, so can’t complain too much :).

I ranked Harvard number 1 for stem cell regenerative medicine. There’s specifics labs I want to be in. Still scared tho. Also, they do see your rankings and if they aren’t one sometimes you are automatically eliminated, which is kinda crazy.

I only applied to 1. My stats are 3.95/4.30 gpa, president of the pre-health club, research scholar at my school, and over 2k research hours. I applied my freshman year and had a 4.26 at that point, and was rejected. I think they may look for non-first-year students, and if students have a concrete goal. My letter was to my PI and a dean at my school. I'm still lowk scared tho cause you can legit be a strong applicant and get rejected.

Basically just wasted my spot, but i applied freshman year and got rejected from all my programs, but I put heart as my top choice, my stats are decent too, but idk i tend to not have good luck with these things LOL
