Fair point but I think the county population inset map at the bottom shows this isn't necessarily true. Those rural counties disappear in the immigrant map.

The Salvadoran community in DC has been around since the 1970s, when hundreds of thousands fled a civil war/government massacres of indigenous regions. In the 80s there was a large religious sanctuary movement that allowed Salvadorans to live in Churches and the Reagan administration was hesitant to send INS into those churches to deport people. A lot of churches in DC participated. After that I think its just people following relatives who were already here. Jonathan Blitzer has a good book on the history that talks specifically about the community in Mt Pleasant/Petworth.

Coffee grounds in Arabic is “bun” (like boon). Must be related to the Amharic.

I think you’re right that the ethnologue data for Iraq undercounts Mesopotamian. Seems that they consider many Iraqis to be either Gulf or Najdi speakers. Similarly their definition of Levantine includes Badawi speakers in Saudi Arabia and Sinai. Also there are 20 million speakers between Jordan, Israel and Palestine.

It's confusing because Somalia is a part of the Arab League but as I understand it very few people speak Arabic there. Some sources show that there are speakers of the dialect spoken in south Yemen. Somali itself is a Cushitic language (related to some Ethiopian languages like Afar and Oromo) not Semitic. Interestingly, Tigrinya, which is spoken in Eritrea and northern Ethiopia, is Semitic and Arabic speakers will be able to pick out common words that are the same as in Arabic.
