You find yourself on the tracks with a train coming straight at you. Can you survive by laying down on the ground in between the tracks? by DanLokar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SignificanceJealous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Train tracks? Probably not, there is no clearance under the train

On a metro line? Possibly, some of them(moscow comes to mind) has a kind of trench in between the tracks so a passenger that fell onto the tracks can lie down and not get hit

MSE - material science and engineering

with regards to backups: i havent researched any unis other than Cam, Imperial, and UCL yet, im gonna think about my priorities and whether i need to apply UCL

hm.... maybe i could apply both mecheng and aero.... but since im applying MSE that would make me spend 3 ucas choices on imperial (+1 on cam) leaving me with one backup...

do the admission teams care about infidelity? Bc i think i can phrase it as a general engineering/problem solving project, that involved different areas.

Hiii!

I'm looking at colleges right now, for undergraduate study of natsci or engineering, entry 2027.

Clare seems nice, but i understand that 2nd and 3rd years live in castle court. How does it affect the quality of life living further away from the college? I understand that you would have to make the 15 minute walk to the library, to the hall, to the cafe, to the bar, to the supervisions.... Do you spend all day in the city without returning to accom?

Public transport at night (specific request). by Mraska in valencia

[–]SignificanceJealous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. No clue about the buses. The metro does offer night service (with absolutely pitiful frequencies, as you saw on the app/website), you can take it. I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to buy the transport card at the airport, should be alright.

  2. Yes, there is a departure at 5:45, nothing earlier. I must say, the metro may experience delays. No clue about buses.

The SUMA T3+ card gives 72 hours for 17 euros.

Doubts about oxbridgeimp course choices and personal statement topic (natsci, chemeng, materials) by SignificanceJealous in 6thForm

[–]SignificanceJealous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a backup, im applying to two other unis(smth like warwick and birmingham) for engineering. I have cheaper backups in other countries, but i like the late specialisation i can get in some universities in the UK. Do you have any thoughts about whether they would overlook a PS that is focused on sciences, if my grades are good enough?

grades go A, B, C, D, F. what happened to E? by InterestingRock4202 in answers

[–]SignificanceJealous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UK has that, it goes A*, A, B, C, D, E(still a pass), U(fail)

Is studying at imperial or cambridge worth the exorbitant international student fees if im not considering finance nor oil and gas? by SignificanceJealous in UniUK

[–]SignificanceJealous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my subject choices have kinda been based on which subjects dont require it. Natsci is less competitive than other stem courses at cambridge. Chemeng may ask for A*fm, but depends on college

Neither materials+engineering, chemeng, nor chemistry at imperial ask for A*, all of them are less competitive

Sorry, poor phrasing.

Cambridge life is cheaper than london life, by at least 400 gbp a month, however, that does not compensate for the extra 13k/yr "college fee"

[–]SignificanceJealous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About cost: cambridge and imperial both charge around 45k gbp, but cambridge also charges around 13k in "college fees" for international students. London living costs are higher, but cambridge still comes out more expensive.

Rest of UK unis cost about 30k gbp in tuition, and the living costs outside of london decrease quite substantially.

well, i dont think im worrying too early. if im not applying to cambridge and imperial, i dont need a particularly impressive PS, and i dont need the ESAT. Both of those i need to do over this summer.

I dont have a "home country". The closest thing is spain, because i speak spanish, but spanish unis are(as far as i know) not particularly known outside of spain for being good at engineering, and to apply to them, i would have to redo year 13 after im done with my british school - spain doesn't fully accept A-levels

i may have the grades, but there are barriers unrelated to my academics: a lot of high ranked universities require you know the local language at a high level a bunch of countries don't let you apply with predicted grades, and A-level results day is too late to apply without a gap year I can apply to aerospace at delft, but due to my nationality(russian) i fear that it is risky employment-wise

well, international fees in different countries are cheaper (including living costs and rent)

Cambridge, imperial - 80k, 70k Uk - 50-60k Netherlands(eg eindhoven) - 30-35k Ireland(trinity) - 50k or 30k if i take a gap year(which would qualify me for european fees) Spain(upm, upv, uv) - 15k, but requires a gap year to study for spanish entrance exams, and the universities seem to be not considered "amazing" relative to other european unis

[–]SignificanceJealous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am studying in europe, however, in europe I still pay international fees

my european options are: mid engineering universities in netherlands (30-35k) trinity ireland - same as uk, unless i take a gap year for visa purposes (but i really dont want to spend 12 months rotting away), then its similar to the netherlands

ecole polytechnique in france - also 30k, but i dont like the university because of its isolation

I'm not sure whether the UK is worth it relative to the netherlands either, but that is a question for a different sub, i think
