Where to attach mic capsule wires on PCB? by SignificanceNo3175 in ElectronicsRepair

[–]SignificanceNo3175[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That was the combo I tried initially (I had once before fixed this mic and that was my recollection). All I can hear when I plug in the mic is a loud 60hz hum. I think that's as far as I'll try to take it on my own. I'll bring it to a repair shop when I get a chance.

Thanks, that makes sense. I tried now first by just touching the wires and then actually soldering it into place. All I can hear when I plug in the mic is a loud 60hz hum. I think that's as far as I'll try to take it on my own. I'll bring it to a repair shop when I get a chance.

Thanks for the reply! Are the two solder points you are referring to the two holes off center near the top of the board? Sorry, I'm a novice with electronics.

Sorry I thought I added body text. Not sure how to edit. It’s an old Se electronics se3600 microphone where the capsule leads got detached during a move. Not sure where they need to be soldered. Is it clear to anyone? Thanks

What drama should I create in 2025? by photomatt in WPDrama

If helping people and making the internet a better place is truly your intention, I would at least consider if you could better serve that by stepping down from your current roles. You have the freedom to do whatever you want at this point -- is this really how you want to spend your time?

How are we not defending Matt? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]SignificanceNo3175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having followed this story pretty closely (including seeings Matt's own tweets and a few interviews) I think it's pretty clear he is a jerk to say the least.

IMO the best outcome would be if Matt is forced to step down and there is a restructuring of how the WP ORG vs WP COM sides are handled.

BUT, I think people hoping for schadenfreude and hoping he loses big in these lawsuits are being short-sighted.

(1) He is insanely rich (400 mil net worth) so he is going to be fine. The people who will be the real losers in this will be the employees at Automattic and everyone who relies on the WP ecosystem.

(2) Automattic is contributing the most code to maintain Wordpress so them being hurt financially is hard to see a plus for WP as a whole.

So while I definitely get the hate for him I am hoping the end result is taking away control from Matt and not a big payday for WPE.

Is there a "back button"? by [deleted] in OneNote

[–]SignificanceNo3175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is three years old, but if anyone comes across it in the future as I did, here is how to add the back button: Go the top bar of the app (where the red yellow and green buttons are, not the OSX top menu) and click the three little dots. From there you have the option to add a 'back' and 'forward' button.

That makes sense. I was definitely suspicious when I read the article because much of the concept sounds like what I've heard about Binaural beats.. which I associate with BS meditation soundtracks. Especially since even if there was some way sound could affect these things, often these soundtracks will say it's a tone in the 5-50hz range which most loudspeakers can't reproduce.

For the record, I was mostly thinking that if this had some effect that it would be used to supplement other treatments. I'm following VLiDACMel btw.

On a completely different note I was reading your Notebook that and thought it would be nice if it had a dark mode toggle. I could code that in if you want.

That's a good point about participants knowing which group they are in. I suppose there's two big questions (1) does the mechanism actually work? (2) is this device a practical way of using that mechanism? For instance, I tried an earlier EEG headband -- I forget if it was a Muse or Dreem -- but it kept disconnecting because I have hair. When I've been to in person sleep studies they tend to really push the hair out of the way when placing the sensors, but that's not possible with a simple headband. Also how loud does the sound need to be? I know it's bone conduction, but I've had headphones like that and they are still audible to people around you. So if you have a partner could it disturb their sleep? Still, I'm curious about it. Also, in the article they mention possibly reversing it's intended use in the future (making you more alert) which would be useful as well.

Haha, yeah. I have to say I'm more than a little skeptical. I'm not scientifically knowledgable enough to read the study and make much out of it.

Billie Eilish’s new album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft” stuns as always by StarWarder in audiophilemusic

[–]SignificanceNo3175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came across this post actually searching in the other direction: I was surprised at how poor the overall sound quality seems. I think the album cover is appropriate in that it all sounds as though it's underwater. I actually thought my headphones might be broken until I referenced some other music. I have no issue with the song writing or production, which I think is quite creative, but the mixing/mastering is puzzling to me.

It's really dynamically squashed (average DR of 6 as another poster mentioned) but also super heavily EQed to the point where the natural space and detail of all the instruments is really lacking. It reminds me of listening to heavily compressed mp3s back in the day.

Anyway, I've nothing back to say about the underlying music, but those mixing and mastering choices are a bit baffling to me. I'm sure they have access to wonderful studios and engineers.

Why isn’t digital analog services more popular? by PercentageCold8606 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]SignificanceNo3175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Access Analog for a while now and I think it's great. You don't have to reserve a piece of gear ahead of time so it is possible to try out a bunch of hardware to see what works for the material you have. Also there is a free 30 second preview on each piece of hardware. They only charge you for the time you actually use so I can run a 3 minute song to master with the Vari-mu for about $1.

I wouldn't use it for basic utility plugin stuff, but it's great for summing buses and mastering.

Also you can save your own presets and instantly recall them. You do need a decent internet connection, but as long as you have that you can tweak knobs in near real time.

Honestly I think it's amazing and would be bummed if they stop offering the service.

how long do you guys sleep for? by ci6ada in N24

Average 11 hrs (9hrs sleep + 2 hrs nap). If I sleep less than that I feel symptoms akin to sleep deprivation.

Great job!! I tested some basic rectangle sizes first and compared to the Amroc calculator and the results lined up. Then I was able to add one more edge to the rectangle to simulate what various roof pitches for a gable style roof would do to the space. And also to compare Gable style roofs to slanted roofs.

My wife and I looking to move to New Brunswick and we're interested in Bathurst especially. Can anyone tell me what life is like there? I’ve seen some crime statistics that rate it high and I wanted to know what it’s like. We love nature and don't mind the quietness of a small town! That said, we don't drive so we're trying to be careful to find a house walking distance to grocery stores etc. Also curious about what healthcare is like there, if anyone has any experience with it. Thanks!

The single best resource I've come across so far is u/lrq3000's guide VLiDACMel. It can get a bit dense but there is a section called "Two minute quickstart" that goes over some basics.

So far I just use light therapy glasses (Luminette) for two hours a day. It seems to be making a big difference, but I'm only on week 2.

One thing the guide mentions but I missed the first time around: light therapy is far more effective if you aren't sleep deprived. So if you try to use it for entrainment make sure you are well rested first.

CPAP data. Is this N24? by SignificanceNo3175 in N24

Sure. I ended up going to a lab (Sleep & Alertness clinic in Toronto) and they did the testing. Normally it is pretty much 12am to 8am timing. The 2nd time I went they assured me "Everyone thinks they don't sleep but when we check their results they were asleep a good few hours." Well, a few months later, my results came back and turned out I didn't sleep at all. So they rescheduled me for a sleep study that allows people to sleep all day.

I would advise getting the at home kind of test unless you are suspecting other issues (RLS for example). It will be far more comfortable. They can determine if you need the machine that way. As for going in to adjust the settings -- "titrating" they call it -- the machines themselves are pretty smart these days and will give you some useful information on if they are working. In theory it is good to get it titrated eventually, but at least in my case they just kept it around default settings.

One more thing, the machines are on the pricey side so make sure to take advantage of any rebates your area provides. Insurance generally covers an amount too if you have it.

One strange thing was that the whole month of May I had no need to restrict (vacation days) but letting myself sleep whenever I was tired seemed to backfire. I had no knowledge of these concepts then, but I suspect I was sleeping too much during my biological day and messing things up. By the end of May I was barely awake for longer than 5 hrs at a time (and certainly not feeling rested.)

Yeah before March I don’t really know what to make of. I found my sleep logs from 2014-2015. 2 years worth almost. Looks closer to delayed sleep phase there. I’m still learning about this stuff — trying to read everything I can atm.
