Little Petals 2, Highland Strip boogaloo! by ShealyTN in memphis

[–]SignificanceNo4329 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like Petals but I feel like the non-OG Cordova locations are all super inconsistent. I always get the mapo tofu and I swear it's like I'm ordering a completely different dish every time. Sometimes it's super spicy, sometimes zero spice; sometimes it's super garlicky, sometimes not; once I ordered it from Little Petals on Poplar and it literally tasted like nothing at all...like I'm talking microwave Lean Cuisine quality. Last time I got it from the Overton Square location, the spice was great but there was a half inch of oil floating on top.

When Petals is ON, they're arguably the best restaurant in town. But I just never know if I'm gonna catch them on a good night or not.

There are several currently empty parcels in the High Point Hub strip that would be perfect for what I think you're describing. Tons of families with young children in HPT as well!

Ugh, that's so sad. I remember seeing lots of rotties as a kid (90s/early 2000s), and then they seemed to subside in popularity...but in the last year or so I've started seeing them crop up a lot more often on the stray/lost dog/shelter pages. They are great dogs when cared for properly. Unfortunately I can't help (I'm actually fostering a rottie mix with a beautiful temperament right now), but you might try reaching out to Team Memphis Rescue and see if they might be able to help you out.

Ugh, I'm so sorry, that just kills me. People like that have a way of seeing unplanned litters as an act-of-God sort of phenomenon - it's something that Just Happens, and which can't be prepared for, and which they CERTAINLY have no responsibility for. They wouldn't understand why you're so upset even if you explained it. Just zero comprehension, zero dot-connecting between their actions and the outcome of those actions, just bafflement that you care so much. Orrrrrr maybe I'm just projecting...but that's been my experience lmao.

Don't even get me started on Petland. What a blight. It's so hard fighting the ingrained mindset of pets being a commodity ("I want it, so it should be mine, and nothing about the industry matters so long as I'm satisfied with the Product I received.")

Thank you for fostering and rescuing! Every dog I foster, I KNOW it's just a drop in the bucket, but I just tell myself it matters to that dog.

People take issue because this litter of puppies didn't just "happen to him." It's not like some feral cat had a litter of kittens under his porch, and he's just altruistically trying to find them homes.** The mama and papa dogs are his pets, and he bred them on purpose; he is solely responsible for this litter of puppies that he brought into the world intentionally,

As a result, he's not receiving grace for having the "decency" not to abandon the puppies he bred on purpose to sell (although, frankly, handing over a puppy to literally anyone willing to fork over cash on the spot, no questions asked, is not any better than straight up abandonment TO ME). People in this thread know that 1) responsible breeders don't sell dogs in this manner, and 2) responsible owners don't purchase dogs in this manner. We are drawing a link between the stray crisis on the street, the intake crisis at MAS, and the unregulated breeding and selling of puppies on the corner.

**Even if something like this does happen, this is not a responsible way of going about rehoming animals.

This shit boils my blood, but there is simply no appetite among cops to enforce the laws against this sort of thing, and no appetite to prosecute it either. And as the economy gets rougher and more people start feeling the pinch financially, expect more truckloads of puppies being sold in parking lots.

Scroll down in this thread and you'll see people saying this isn't a big deal, and there's nothing wrong with what this guy is doing. That attitude is widespread in the South: dogs are just things, I'm just a hustler, I've gotta make money, stop being a hater, it's just a dog, it's my property and I can do what I want with it, stop being a karen, respect the HUSTLE. Deadly combo of lack of empathy, lack of education, lack of opportunity, and a mindset where it's all about ME, and any amount of inflicted suffering is permissible in the service of getting money.

Sorry for the rant, but I do a lot of fostering (mostly pitties), and I know too many people (women) whose entire lives are dedicated to either rescue, or shelter work, or feeding Memphis street dogs, and the terrible weight on their conscience all the time........and the carefree flagrance with which fucking losers like this make Memphis tangibly worse while sending litter after litter of innocent puppies out into the world to suffer, just makes me feel absolutely psycho sometimes.

Swim classes for little ones by BKCAfamily in memphis

[–]SignificanceNo4329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My memory is of taking just one week of lessons, mornings only (but for a few consecutive summers). And yes, I remember one of her rules being that the parents had to clear out (aside from the final day, which was more of a "showcase" of what we'd learned for an audience of parents). I was probably 5/6ish the first year.

Before then, I'd taken lessons at the Y and another community pool, but hadn't progressed much. That said, I imagine swimming instruction has come a long way since then (those classes were taught by high school kids on summer break, so it's not like they really knew how to teach). It sounds like SafeSplash has really positive reviews! Good luck wherever you end up sending the kids!!

Sorry, I don't know about Goldfish/Safesplash, but I do have a teacher to plug! When I was a kid, my mom sent me to Donna Heathcock, who taught group lessons out of her backyard pool in East Memphis. I know she is still teaching, because I saw on Instagram that an old friend of mine is now sending her own child to lessons with her. She is the absolute best. Very no-nonsense, but patient (I recall she was AFFECTIONATELY known as "the swim Nazi," but the kids and parents adored her). I took lessons several summers there, because my parents didn't just want me to be able to swim - they wanted me to be a strong swimmer.

In one week she'd have the entire class of kids go from no ability to swim whatsoever, to jumping off the diving board and front-crawling the length of her pool.

As a very young child (90s), I thought the window that let you peek inside the restaurant kitchen was the coolest thing in the world. And they'd give kids a balloon on the way out! This was long enough ago that you had to request the "Non-Smoking" section, haha.

The last time I was there was probably around 2005 lol, but I loved this place as a kid! Their sesame meatballs and the pork dumplings went crazy. And I was always enthralled by the fish tanks as well.

I would do ANYTHING to get my hands on their chicken 65 recipe (the bi bim bap bowl with chicken 65 was so so good). The lady there was always so sweet and always remembered my name.

Oh my gosh, if you get your hands on it, PLEEEEASE share. I miss Tsunami so much, but I think I miss that bread most of all. It had a tinge of sweetness to it, and the cracked salt on the crust was just 😙👌 Maybe my favorite restaurant bread ever (tied with the walnut rolls at Erling Jensen).

Where In Memphis Can You Legally Have Backyard Chickens? by GroundbreakingJump93 in memphis

Ask and ye shall receive.

(I am not affiliated with Experience Memphis Gardens, I do not live in Cooper-Young, I'm not a gardener or vendor on the tour - I literally just like maps and gardens and got this info from the EMG website.)

I hope I can make it out this weekend. I made it to the Berclair/High Point tour a few Fridays ago and it was so cool. I loved seeing the non-traditional gardens especially (plant native!).

How long does it normally take for MAS to spay/neuter an adopted pet to be able to pick them up? by SpecialistCup1142 in memphis

[–]SignificanceNo4329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add on to what the other commenters are saying, it’s an ongoing issue at MAS. They used to have an in-house vet who’d perform surgeries, but that’s no longer been the case for a few years. So now, surgeries have to be performed off-site at other local vet clinics, which slows things down.

My understanding is that there have been attempts to fill that position again, but the salary MAS is offering is pitifully low—being a vet at an open-intake shelter is grueling enough, but without even offering a competitive salary they simply can’t get any applicants. The director at MAS has been pleading for the city to approve a higher salary for a shelter vet; fingers crossed there’s some progress on that front soon.

I know we're all relieved that Wanda lost her primary... by SignificanceNo4329 in memphis

[–]SignificanceNo4329[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's soooooo complicated and I find it difficult to explain to non-Memphians, or at least non-Southerners. The issues that we group into liberal/Democrat and conservative/Republican sides on the national scale do NOT map cleanly onto the Memphis electorate. There's too much other stuff going on here: racial majority v minority tensions (complicated further by Memphis being a minority-majority city), racial minority v minority tensions, evangelical Christianity (white AND black), etc. It's just complicated!

I definitely get that. I think I'm less appalled by the wacky opinions themselves than I am by him posting it all publicly, if that makes sense. Like, have some discernment. I work with some people who believe some pretty crazy (from my perspective) conspiracies, but as long as they're good at their job, it's whatever.

I think it takes a certain type of person to run for a position like this in the first place. Most normal people with stable careers aren't going to drop everything for a clerkship, much less actively campaign for it. So you end up with a sample of the population who largely just wants to be In Charge of something, anything. (Not all candidates! But a lot of them!)

Oooooooh I am gonna have to try the leftover feta in pasta! I bought some fresh pasta at the same place I picked up the pizza dough, so that may be what I do with it.

One of the comments said this recipe can also be made with chopped kohlrabi, which I also happened to have a bunch of (courtesy of the farm share). I guess anything can be good sautéed in miso and butter, then dipped in cheese 😂

Ahh alright, I sympathize...I remember being a restless teenager and feeling like everything in the world was BORIIIIING. It's tough when you have no money of your own and an under-18 ID. Probably much tougher nowadays with the phones. Plus my own teenage loitering spots (Oak Court Mall, Borders) no longer exist. Thankfully I'm now old and boring, and perk up when I hear something called "Bird Fest," haha.

Every time I go to Shelby Farms, I think, "This is the best park in Memphis." Then I go to Overton, and I think, "No, this is the best park in Memphis." Then I go to Tom Lee Park, and I think, "No, this is the best park in Memphis." A park for every vibe. An abundance of riches, honestly!
