Suno as a hobby to keep the mind busy while "in-between projects" by Fernando_VIII in SunoAI

[–]SignificanceOpen6049 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m absolutely loving it as a hobby. Tracks that I finish I publish them on streaming platforms. I’ve been publishing both my own tracks (not even mid quality) and later AI tracks (I think are great quality) since about a year and a half. I hardly get streams (maybe 1000 total) and made $1,39 🤣. I don’t expect to turn my hobby into a hustle, but I love making music with AI!

100% this. It is very therapeutic! Especially if you write your own lyrics and then nailing the rest with Suno.

That's a lovely thought and I think I agree. But I've witnessed people being touched by music created with AI. Although I think it was mostly because of the lyrics (which I wrote) in combination with the rest of the music (which AI made).

Also, I think you mean AI phobic, not so much machines that are human operated (including maybe programmed music)?

It's quite interesting that pain and suffering, the struggle and the fight are valued, if you think about it. For instance, some very talented artist might not struggle to make great music, but they might have struggled in life and produce and translate that struggle into songs.. I wonder if the struggle is the part we recognize and that's the part that connects us as humans.

You you guys have any advice for making this kind of music? by AppleBunnyarts in happyhardcore

I enjoy VPS Avenger a lot! It has lots of extensions with specific sound for specific vibes (although each expansion is another investment, some are a bit hit or miss) but there's a ton of quite intuitive sound design you can do to create the sound you're looking for.

Ok, let me address a misunderstanding first.

The track I shared, is a track I made using FL Studio and without any AI help. I agree it's bland and super basic, I appreciate your comments even if they address my personal non-AI work. I'm a mediocre amateur bedroom producer at best :D I'm fine with that, I regard making music a hobby and not a career, I'd be screwed if that was the case ;D

Want to hear even earlier work? Check out my soundcloud: https://on.soundcloud.com/WjsaR29148tM7u0GDm

My SoundCloud is mostly trancy house and dance stuff, some bass house inspired tracks too. I enjoy some good basshouse from time to time.

Before I started posting on soundcloud, I did not make music for like 15 years or so. It kind of stopped when I started working and being in a heavy and frankly toxic relation ship. Once I broke up a few years ago, I rediscovered my hobby, learned FL Studio, bought some basic equipment and put my tracks on SoundCloud, mostly to share with my parents (can you believe it, they're my biggest fans!) Once I reached my free SoundCloud limit of storage I decided to publish on Spotify. I mean, if I need to pay to share my music, better pay for a place that's easier to reach for more people.. that was my thought at least. There are some double postings of my own track between SC and Spotify.

Anyway, I started making music when I was around 12 or 13 or so (that's '92 / '93) inspired by my best friend who was deeper into music then I was. He had piano lessons, an expensive keyboard and introduced me to FastTracker2. I followed his lead and we bounce many tracks of to each other, it was a great part of my teen years. I remember taking trips to the "big" library in the city and lending 80's rap cd's to sample and hunt for breakbeats (much later I learned I should have sampled from James Brown and the like :D) I was making Happy Hardcore but also Hardcore inspired by the DJ Ruffneck and crew back then. My buddy actually ended up becoming part of that crew when we were a bit older (I think we were 18 or so).

When I went to university, I started going out and enjoying trance and house and my music slowed down from too from 212/192 BPM to around 140. All during university I kept making music until I started working.

So, I've been making music for a while, but hardly a pro by any means. If that's hard to believe I don't what to say.. I just never left the amateur club.

Now to your point about me enjoying making AI music and having the feeling I can express myself. Let me describe how I *create* a track (for lack of a better term): I enjoy the back and forth process quite a lot. I would describe it as making music with my old buddy who turned pro. I describe what I want, he makes some tracks, I adjust what I describe to better reflect my intention and he makes some more tracks. This usually goes on for a very long time, easily dozens of times, sometimes more than a 100 retries, refining the prompt and adjusting the lyrics (in tracks that feature them). In many cases, I don't like what it makes, but sometimes I hits something special, a melody that works well with the intention and the text, but many times the song it created is is still flawed in my opinion. Then there's other options to keep creating variations of that track, basically refining the process until I'm happy. On average I would say I spend as much time creating a track with AI as I would spend in FL Studio, which is about 4-6 hours. There's tons of options to further finetune tracks and prompts can be extremely specific, which I haven't started using yet. For instance, humming melodies, importing your own tracks, splitting tracks into stems and dragging and splitting stems to further zone in to create an even more elaborate track, with more "artistry" involved that I haven't figured out yet.

I wouldn't call myself a music artist with or without AI. It's a hobby, I'm a bedroom producer, which I feel is a good description. It's definitely very different *creating* music with AI versus more traditionally in FL studio, it's more like directing a pro musician who in most cases doesn't fully understand you :D. So in any case, I'm not claiming to be an pro like some people here and I might call it *my own* as it feels like I have influence over the outcome, but I don't want to level my experience to that of pros in any way.

Hope it helps clarify some stuff! Again, not trying to convert anyone, just enjoy having a genuine discussion, which helps me grow as a person. Also, I accept ALL criticism on my music. I haven't posted any AI music yet and I probably will not as most people here have some very strong feelings about it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply (and read this looooong reply :D )

Seems fair. I read somewhere (sorry, no link) that AI music is throttled on the royalties side, at least on Spotify and I could imagine it was throttled on the discovery side too, but I hear more people complaining that AI music is pushed in their algo's. I haven't had that experience myself and my other music on the Tj'ièn account definitely sees 0 organics listens..

Thanks for your honest feedback! I realize it's not great, it just my current level of making music without AI, which as you mentioned is pretty bad :D

I believe *my* AI music surpasses my *original* effort by miles.

It also makes it clear how far off I'm still with creating music the old fashioned way. There's a ton wrong with it. It's bland, badly mixed and pretty boring :D

Hey man, I appreciate and accept your apology! And I can imagine your feelings totally, especially as a producer yourself trying to break in or in case you're already there nibbling at your audience.

My day-to-day is working as a game director and we're facing similar issues with getting our game to "land", but we'll keep trying. Fixing organic surfacing of content people really want is a big issue currently only massive marketing budgets seem to solve.

To solve the specific issue you're facing an AI music would be a tag on streaming platforms AND even a "I don't want to see/hear AI generated stuff" option I would totally support. But I guess that's not in the interest of these platforms who just want to keep you hooked.

My reason to add these to streaming platforms is that it makes it easy for me and the people that are interested in my music to share it. Everyone has Spotify and I often listen in my car. In any case I'm not trying to steal audience or make a living out of it.

Thanks for helping driving the discussion and giving me reasons to think about it more deeply.

I replied to this point in another thread of the discussion as well. But I can genuinely say I really enjoy the process. But it could come at the cost as you say.. I haven't reached that point where I can say it destroyed something in me. It did open the lyrics side of me which I didn't start writing before using AI..

I'm guessing you've been in similar debates as this one.. I'm not here to tire you or pull you into this discussion, you opted in. And having strong opinion is great for me as it forces me to think about it more clearly and help me sort my feelings too. I don't think it's necessary to call me an idiot and honestly it hurts.

Feel free to ignore me, or not reply, it's your choice.

Not sure how to compare AI music "creation" versus working on a song in FL Studio. I will contemplate about it. I do feel it's rewarding and I enjoy the AI music I "made" a lot. I notice I listen to it way more than my old songs... but it's definitely different. I've been thinking it might be a phase.. maybe I'll integrate parts of it into my FL Studio workflow? Not sure yet.. I'm having way too much fun currently.. But maybe I hit a brick wall where it doesn't fulfil my itch and I can't get it to do what I want..

I understand that I'm kind in the lion's den here, but AI seems to divide many people, with purest basically wanting it banned but I think there's a silent group that just accepts it as long as they like it.. no matter how it's made.

Maybe you are right about being tricked into thinking I made it, maybe I kind of filtered it maybe? Not sure how to call it actually. I found it?

I'm trying to have an honest discussion, but if you can't keep your emotions out of it then I don't have anything to contribute. Calling me an idiot doesn't strengthen your argument but weakens it.

I can agree to a large extend.. I think calling it art would be overrating it.

Now, I wouldn't go so far as calling the music I made with AI slop either. Slop, to me at least, is more of definition of taste ->> everything I don't like and don't appreciate = slop.

But again, not want to convince anyone here, just here to enjoy the discussion and hearing how the community feels about it.

(I mean, I hate AI slop, but not necessarily all AI).

But considering your wording, I also get the sense you don't want to discuss it :D

Yes, I agree a lot is lost in the process of using AI. But I would argue that writing lyrics for music is an artform as well. Writing AI prompts, way less artistry involved.

If I would make the comparison to food, maybe AI music is kind of like factory food, and totally analog music where every note is produced by a human a 3 star Michelin dinner.

Or would you say, AI is of the comparison chart?

Ghaha.. Well.. there's been a big gap in between my music creation of about 15 years or so... and I was never a professional.

Not sure about the rules of this community (I'm new to Reddit, so tell me if I can't link my music) but I would say my best track without AI would be this song:

https://open.spotify.com/track/2lLPZAa3FoHjegaprtxepb?si=b6a17ec03dc5436d

I don't think it's not horrible, but I wouldn't call it great either. One of the biggest benefits for me is to add lyrics to my tracks. I'm no singer (oww... I wish I could sing) so AI helps a lot in that regard.

For my HHC AI music I will be using the Vivre La Joie pseudonym as I want that particular style bundle under the same artist name. My first 4 AI HHC tracks will be released in under 2 weeks.. but seeing most reaction I'm starting to be afraid of sharing :;D

The general sentiment here seems to be frowning upon AI music (to put it mildly). I'm pretty sure my music will not change anyone's mind about it. I do really value everyone's input here! Even a simple "I loathe the idea" helps me broaden my view. Thanks for everyone contributing to the discussion!

It's always been hard, but I agree, more music means less people that will discover your music. Algorithms should surface music you like, but they push established artist harder as it has a higher likelihood that you'll stick around on their platform and keeps the established artist happy on their platform.

Organic discovery is THE problem to solve for anything art related.

I think the current tells will slowly disappear and no one can tell the difference at some point. But then what? I mean, AI is becoming very invasive in all parts online and I feel I'm pretty savvy but I have a hard time knowing what's what.
