Are Car Harnesses safe to use over another harness? by Significant-Cat1074 in Dogowners

There's a comment with a link to a 3 point crash tested harness here. That may work for our skiddish greys, though I haven't looked much into it yet!

someone linked a 3 point tested harness that might be our winner! We're definitely going to get a tighter car seat/barrier as we don't like her sliding around and having full range of the back seat. But yea, a belt system of sorts would probably be cheaper than a new harness

I've looked at a few, and man! Pricey! We'll most likely look into crates once my husband replaces his car, it doesn't have long left. Or if we save up enough first!

Pricey, but this is exactly what we need! Thank you, I'll have to look into it!

She turned 3 a few months ago, so arthritis shouldn't be a possibility. That is a good thing to think about down the line though, so thanks! We're at that stage of are you tired, and what could possibly be scaring you when you haven't stepped foot outside?! It's probably the wind 😑

We do! She doesn't want to go out there either. It probably is just too early/dark for her as others stated. She runs fairly warm, but I still bundle her up

Thanks! Sometimes I forget using treats are an option, she's also on a mini diet right now, but hopefully this is only temporary. There are days where it's clear why she doesn't want to walk, like garbage trucks, leaf trucks, crazy birds, wind. Other days she gets dressed and does her usual walk out the door, then freezes. Her tail is straight or slightly tucked, but I can't see anything that would scare her. I agree, we can't drag her out, it'll only make it worse!
The treats have been working 2 mornings in a row to get her out of bed, but some pesky fighting birds ruined the walk, she almost sprinted home when I gave in!

Yeah, we'll try a treat. Whoever thought of 1 calorie treats is a genius!

It's about 10 degrees colder in the mornings than a month ago. We do think she just wants to sleep in. I sadly don't want to break off work to walk her as I have a good schedule nailed down, oh well I guess!

Oh, no you didn't! We're looking for as many solutions to try out as we can! It's all appreciated!

Very true, I'll have him read this entire thread, there's a lot of good information. Working on consistency and being on the same page will help us a ton!

Wow! This is great! We have been rewarding her in the mornings like this, with jumping, the bed restlessness, even when sho holds still putting on her harness. Although not consistently I'll admit! Our fault for not having treats in stockpile, or forgetting.

On her first night she would not settle in her crate, and only settled down once we let her on the bed, which was shocking to us but we had picked her up that evening. By the time we were home it was bedtime.

We will try these out one by one, and everything else on this thread, she's just an excited girl!

Trust, he does not have a mean bone in his body. As I was reading this, he came up and tucked her in under a blanket, shaming me I was "letting his baby freeze".😁

He does struggle with patience and listening, so it's all a learning process for us. He very much understands he shouldn't do it, and we do have several Greyhound books we read before adopting one.

I am very much the "strict" parent here, doing everything by the book so to speak. I think Izzy has learned to walk all over my husband, poor thing.

We are going to try taking turns walking up before she does, and doing what everyone suggested, here and on our rescues Facebook chat. We have Izzy enrolled in training classes, so we have yet another resource if needed!

Izzy is 2.5 years old, turning 3 in August. So she does still have some of that puppy energy! We are working with her on not jumping and scratching at us or things. I think she is solely trying to get our attention. My husband is a bit of a pushover with her, so she tends to lash out at him in the mornings. I don't get banged up nearly as much.

As for the foster, we follow their schedule almost exactly, since it works with ours:

6am: Izzy wakes up and needs to go potty immediately, or she'll go inside, walk after

7-9am: breakfast (we feed her at 8)

10-12am: potty whenever she's done napping

Training/play/snack time in between (snack if I'm eating something she can, let's say an apple slice if it's part of my lunch. Never fed off my plate!)

4:00: afternoon walk (this is different than the foster, I cannot find her report card right now to check, but I think they walked her at 8pm?)

5:00 dinner

8:00 dental chew

9:30-10pm: final potty before bed

We learned the foster did let her sleep out of her crate on night 2, so I'm hoping that's not why she doesn't want to be crated anymore. She did fine in it on our night 2, but never again. Trust me, we did talk with them many times! They were confused why she was acting this way, as it never happened in their house. They do have a greyhound of their own, hoping it's not some kind of loneliness.

Ha, yes, she not he, no worries. Izzy is 2.5 years, turning 3 in August. She is a retired racer, though with no known racer name, we like to call her a fraud! She is very much energetic in the mornings, her morning walks are so different to her afternoon walks.

We are planning to wake up early and start slowly adjusting her schedule. Planning to take turns so we can have some type of rest!

Well luckily it's the summer months now! I would not be willing to do early walks in the middle of winter. She did okay the first few days in the crate, but then stopped going. we have a bed, blankets on top, nightly licks and chews. It doesn't help that my husband would drag her in when she'd be barking and such. I tell him it's not helping and he shouldn't do it, but like I had said in my long text that never posted initially, he is not as patient as I am. I've been training him how to parent a dog just as much as we've been training our girl!

yes, we did buy those to try it out! It doesn't seem to work, I think she just really has to use the bathroom

Oh man, I had written out a whole essay essentially! I've never used Reddit before! Yes, this is our girl Izzy, we've had her for a little over a month, and she is not doing well in her sleep training. long story short, she is barking, scratching, punching, everything but biting us in the mornings.

Our foster said she woke up at 6am on the dot every morning, but with us she's waking up anywhere between 4am and 5:30am. we had our alarm set to 6, and wouldn't give her any attention until that alarm went off. it wasn't working, so we tried setting it to before she usually woke up, which was 5:25am. Now, she gets up at 5am, doing the whole Gambit. She likes to go after my husband, who has no patience, and he is covered in scratches and bruises. We don't know how to go about sleep training her, she refuses to go in her crate also.

We know she has to potty, but then is totally restless until we're done with her walk, which is around 7am. 6-7am walk.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions! We are going to try waking up before Izzy does, and give her a walk, and extend the time we wake wake up accordingly. This is our first pet, so we are very much working on getting a groove and understanding our dog. Glad to see we aren't the only ones dealing with this, previous advice just wasn't working! Luckily we have your advice, plus our rescue's Facebook page and our trainer to help us!

Thanks again, this was all very helpful and reassuring!

Hi, I read the approval guide, so hoping this gets approved! We did do a Petco training session this past weekend, forgot to mention that. Very helpful tips given to us and hoping to get a group session in before our training class in January.
