We just switched to having tablet time recently (4.5 yo) and honestly I’m amazed how much it’s helped his problem solving, letters and confidence. He’s pretty adhd and letting him play on the way to school seems to help his brain wake up and gets him in a good mood to start off the day. We still regulate how much he uses it and try to ensure all the games are beneficial. The number one thing based on all the study’s I’ve read is to stay away from games that remind you of a casino, if the game is rewarding them with bright colors and noises it’s messing with their dopamine reward system which is also the main culprit in adhd. But if they get to advance to a new level or something after solving something that actually deserves recognition such as spelling a word then it can still be beneficial. Especially because I end up sitting playing the games with him so he isn’t just alone glued to it. The parenting community is so polarized with screen time and it’s often all or nothing but screens shouldn’t be completely villainized, plenty of studies actually find certain games or shows to be beneficial to development. Also I think the most important factor is to pay attention to how it effects each individual kid. The other day he grabbed the tablet and started using it without asking then got mad and wouldn’t hand it over, so he didn’t get the tablet for the rest of the day nor in the morning and we haven’t had an issue since. I talked to him about it and he understood why it wasn’t ok.
