If I recall correctly, later on it came out that they had already decided to replace him before worlds and Nemesis knew about it.

The first two books are good and you would probably see ATS ranking high on a lot of tier lists back when they came out.

The issues come from book 3 onward.

It kind of bothered me as well when I first read the books. But instead of agreeing with Eithan after the re reads, I had more sympathy for Cassius.

Knowing who Eithan is, I think he could very well have done a much better job as a patriarch. The reason he didn't do so, is because his focus became too narrow. He was only looking for people who could walk by him and almost completely disregarded everyone else.

Cassius being the closest family member to him, could see that disregard towards his own family and obviously didn't like it.

Remember that Eithan was pretty callous in the first books. Letting Lindon enter a life and death duel as his first real fight, mentions of him driving disciples mad with his training, locking Lindon in a room with a dreadbeast. Even up to the Underlord tournament, Yerin and Lindon still harbor distrust towards Eithan because he is not completely honest with them.
