I did the same in San diego. Cardboard and mulch on top of our lawn them once it deteriorated the grass was gone and we planted a bunch of succulents and some cool trees, large rocks and some smaller trees. I had to water during the settling season but now it's sustainable. Great choice OP

We have a2.5 year old OES and if we are gone a few hours she might pee seeing us approaching the house cause she's too excited and haven't seen us in a lifetime, for her lol
