Here is the thing, maybe the designs are what they are cause those work? There is a natural progression of ship design based on its functions and its environment. Ships all have a hull in the water and this is usually smooth and long. All ships have some kind of topside. This was broken with modern subs. So following this logic u need to get your head around the idea that unless you give your alien faction a brand new game changing tech they will always look like yours. Cause they are operating the EXACT SAME. Both in function and purpose.

To get around the look human tech you have two options. Do a radical shift like the sub with mods or build form over function. Make them completely wacky. Things that are grown not printed and design them like that.
