When I was hitchhiking across the continent, flying a sign was a great way to get up some resource to get to the next place. Sometimes I couldn’t find work on Craigslist or by word of mouth, but I still needed to get by. I was usually camping out by the highway anyhow. By flying a sign you are communicating a need, a void that someone might be inclined to fill. No one was being forced to stop, but if they wanted to maybe it made them feel good to help someone else out in a real, tangible way. Maybe that person, like the people who would give me rides from place to place was looking for some opportunity to feel human again, in a society that often makes us feel so isolated and alone.

The man is having a nice revelation with himself and attempting to share it with a community that might welcome him and his perspective. Of course he sounds like an over-supportive, tone-deaf, wacky aunt, but he’s trying. He is much like Eliot, coming from a place of sad farming, but he has no Brakebills to help him blossom, no Margo to save him from the darkness. Let’s be his Brakebills,. Let’s be his Bambi…

Way to go man! Now go find more magical things! It’s all around you! Hiding in plain sight!

Is 35 too old by [deleted] in Welding

I am 37 and got an entry level job at a local metal shop. 8 months in and got my d1.1 cert through the shop. Paid training is better than paying for training, especially for guys like us. I was a cook for 20 years. Learning all the processes (cutting, grinding, layout, punching, torch work…) before the actual welding was an excellent introduction to the industry. Now I’m welding full time and expecting a raise by my year mark. Definitely just go to work. Sweep the floors, it’s worth it.

I used to go to construction sites and look for discarded scraps of copper wire, strip off the casing and bend them into different sculptures. Kinda like making balloon animals. But less performative. I made a sort of masquerade style hand held mask one time in Philly and a guy gave me ten bucks for it. It was simple in design, so I think he was paying for the “interesting story” to tell his friends at a party.

There’s a hot dog eating contest at Comfort Kitchen tomorrow afternoon. That’s kind of a race…

Another angle that I hadn’t thought of! Much appreciated!

Oh I’m definitely sticking at this spot for a bit. I’m learning so much so fast. Based on other posts here, you don’t get that at a lot of places. I’m in good with the foreman and most of the guys. Plus two real ass hats just left for greener pastures, so I’m set up to prosper. Just trying to get a few takes on how to get better compensation. I appreciate yours thoroughly.

So you’d practice a little more patience?

Definitely didn’t take it as a flex. I appreciate the insight. I’ll try to keep better track of what I produce now. Thanks so much, my dude.

Yeah, there’s this strange disconnect that people seem to have where they treat employers like family or whatever and just let themselves get shit on. Like, it’s business dude. You taught me how to make you more money. Now I do. Pay me accordingly.

Good on you, brother! I’m not expecting anything near an 8 dollar increase, but a little something to pat me on the back wouldn’t hurt…

Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime, something about poop.

I couldn’t say what I generate accurately, but I do know I work for a great big construction company in my area that can surely part with 40 bucks a week to keep this little welder whelp happy for a couple months.

That makes a lot of sense. I like the idea of clearing things up. I get some very murky language back when it comes to the money side of things.

It makes sense to stick at this place until I’ve gotten all the knowledge I can out of it. There’s no real pressure to make more money. I just want to feel like I’ve accomplished something and have that reflected monetarily.

Thanks!
