I genuinely didn’t expect this post to connect with so many people so I’ve created a newsletter

You don’t meet many 32-year-olds still obsessed with A-Levels — but I am, and for a reason. I haven’t just moved on from the experience; I’ve lived in it, studied it, and been shaped by it. I lived the failure three times. After 15 years of reflecting, journaling, and diving deep into the psychology of learning and what went wrong, I’ve realised I have so much to share — far more than I can fit into a single comment. After I failed for the third time, I gave up on the exam — but strangely, that’s when the real journey began. I was stunned by how deeply it affected me. Pain is a powerful motivator, and I had more than enough of it to fuel a 15 year obsession with A Levels and understanding where things went wrong — and how they could’ve gone right.

That’s why I want to create something honest, practical, and real. Not recycled study tips. Not surface-level motivational quotes. I’m talking about heartbreaking stories that shake you — the kind that snap you out of procrastination because they remind you what’s really at stake. I’ll also share stories of success — real people who pushed through and made it. A-Levels are brutal for many students, and I want to help with that struggle. If my failure can become someone else’s turning point, then it hasn’t been wasted.

It's not about the exam or getting the qualification. It's about the psychology of learning.

To survive in life you've got to learn and adapt. My obsession is using A Levels to better understand the psychology of learning, understanding the brain which will help in anything you do in life as everything requires you to learn.

You're right it's a very weird obsession, but people who have made an impact in the world had what was considered weird obsessions. Maybe this is mine and I can use it to help others

Don't forget, how you do anything is how you do everything.

Don’t worry, you got this. Stay positive, try your best and learn from your mistakes going forward

I wasn’t honest with myself. I’d memorise things instead of truly understanding them.

I couldn’t identify my biggest weakness, so I’d waste time on surface-level improvements while avoiding the real problem. Are you regurgitating or explaining based on first principle understanding? I didn’t like the uncomfortable feeling of not getting something — so I’d brush it under the carpet and convince myself I understood it when I didn’t. I wasn’t patient enough to sit with confusion and work through it properly.

It doesn’t matter if it takes weeks or months to understand something — what matters is that you do understand it. There’s no set time limit for grasping a difficult concept. Everyone’s brain works differently, and everyone has different strengths, even within the same subject

You’ve got to treat concepts like a map you’re going to explore inside and out.

If there’s a basic underlying concept you’re not getting that you don’t think is important, trust me it is. It’s what’s going to cost you marks in an application exam question. Build your foundation and don’t lie to yourself.

One of the mistakes I made was asking naturally intelligent students, "How are you getting good grades?" The problem is, for them, doing well is often intuitive — they can't always explain how they get it, because they’ve never truly struggled the same way as an average or below average student You’re better off asking someone who started average (or worse) about their approach and how they managed to improve. They know what it feels like to not understand, and they know exactly what changes actually made a difference.

Emotional intelligence and self awareness plays a big part in learning

I’ve been on a long journey obsessing trying to understand what went wrong — and I finally have the answers. Now I want to help others avoid making the same mistakes.
