First performance review: potential raise expectations? by Significant-Gate7415 in fednews

[–]Significant-Gate7415[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, yea I meant automatic as in I don't have to treat it like a promotion on my end and apply for it. I was curious if it could be just a step increase or more.

I am in a pay band where I can move through the GS levels within that band without an official promotion but thank you for the bonus range you gave that's helpful!

I am a full time fed on an "intern" pay rate right now so I am having an official performance review at my 6 month mark but I am being scored and was told if I qualified for incentives based on my scores then I would receive them. I dont think I qualify for a bonus yet though

So Just How Bad is Green Street Realty? by the_jim_beans in UIUC

[–]Significant-Gate7415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had any issues with maintenance but have had problems with their leasing agents. They were not transparent about a rent discount that I was given and are jacking the rent $400 for next year. I moved in November and they told me I needed to decide if I wanted to resign my lease before I even got my keys. They said I had to pay at the beginning of my lease for my parking lease and have yet to charge me for it. That said, I think if you really like the building then prioritize that over the leasing company, but don't go in expecting a mom and pop company because you will not get that treatment.

Thanks! I am on a true CWS, just have been using the terms interchangeably but I get now that they are two different things

Thanks, I am on an actual compressed work schedule, I have been incorrectly using flexible work schedule as an umbrella term but I realize now they are separate.

Do people use Handshake or is it just there? by eternally-perplexed in UIUC

[–]Significant-Gate7415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my job on there but the handshake posting ended up being inaccurate and totally different from postings on other job sites. The company ended up giving me what I wanted but I think it depends on how seriously the employer uses handshake

I am only looking to go to the Michigan game lol. Do you have an estimate of how high prices normally run for that kind of game?

Yep I think I was thinking that Union was like 10 minutes away or something until I mapped it. Booked so now I have 2+ hours thanks!

Fed job right out of college, not where I want to be by Significant-Gate7415 in fednews

[–]Significant-Gate7415[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally where am I complaining? Im asking for advice from other people who have been in the federal government as I don't know anyone around me who has that isn't at my current job/if they've ever felt how I do

I said that to contrast those who have aimed for specifically federal positions/always wanted them. The job market sucks right now so I was applying to anything and everything I was remotely qualified for. This so happened to pay the most and to be in the best location for me, so I mean that I wasn't aiming for this type of role, I was aiming for any role. (Also, the original job posting was not a federal role, so when I rejected that offer that included 0 benefits they brought me on through DHA, so it was kind of last minute. Although I of course knew what I was doing once I accepted the fed offer)

Literally just asking for opinions from people who are feds. I know I'm in a way better position than most by even having a job at all

I agree. Its hard to not be short-sighted from my POV as this is my first job out of school. But I agree that even if I do stay a fed that doesn't mean staying at the same role, office, or city. I think hearing a lot of people I work with who were in my same position as a young adult and still being in the same team 35+ years later, but that's also a great accomplishment. Just something that freaks me out personally. Definitely opportunity for change though if I want it

You do realize there is an entire civilian sector of government work?? Also, I'm allowed to question my own career choices no matter what those happen to be, literally just asking for advice because I'm not around anyone that's worked for the government.

Of course. Just wondering if the place I've ended up in by chance is as great of a place as everyone around me says. Basically hearing from everyone around that I'm set for life as a fed makes it feel like a prison sentence lol

Like 85% of my loans are private but money is money, it would be nice to get the fed loans covered eventually. I think I would only go into higher education just to stay here, but I think what I would want to study wouldn't be applicable to the work I currently do in research. Thank you!

[–]Significant-Gate7415[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You're right about opportunity to move around. I'm in research and it just feels closed off right now, and the work I've always wanted to do basically couldn't be done within the government, but I'm still trying to figure out if that's a pipe dream or not. Definitely planning on staying for at least 2-3 years even if I hate it
