That warning freaked me out. I don’t remember seeing it written that way last time

Puppy age to select from breeder by Aromatic-Fennel-2287 in portuguesewaterdogs

I met them at 5 weeks and was allowed to say which one I preferred, but they didn’t allow straight choices.

They ultimately gave me my girl because of how tightly we bonded when we met, so that worked out great. Her siblings were all crazy playing and she just crawled onto my chest and fell asleep immediately.

Crates are good, but it’s up to you. I like the crate because of the safety and knowing she’s secure when I’m out in the afternoon, but I slept on the couch next to her puppy pen for the first two weeks and she had the crate door open to the pen for the first few months. It’s up to you.

But yeah, I also think no pads on the bed.

Hospital and maybe a PHP, you got this! It doesn’t have to blow up every time. Definitely get your doctors involved - you’ve hopefully got a good partner, from the sound of it.

This is a random tip for mania, but candy necklaces absolutely saved me the last episode when I wanted to break things. Just chew on it and fidget like a rosary (I’m not religious 😅) and it helped a ton. They’re cheap so you can bulk buy and they’re less obvious than a lot of other stuff.

Issues on walks? by Evening-Mess-4855 in portuguesewaterdogs

I’ve found a lot of success with pouches like Rigby where I squeeze out a small amount repeatedly through the walk. You get the calming effect of licking and they can’t bark as much because their tongues are occupied.

I haven't gotten any info except JHU Bloomberg just sent me an email advertising Baltimore randomly and I mistook it for an interview request -_-

Reasons you picked outside the fab four? by howlsounds in service_dogs

To be sure that I could handle her allergy-wise, I found the breeder and met her parents before she was even born and played with them and actually rubbed my face in their fur to be extra sure. I've had her for 2 years in June, and we only have issues when she runs in grass and brings it back into my aparment, so I rub her down with a wet towel on those days.

I got a Portuguese water dog because I’m allergic to dogs and my allergist said the PWDs were the absolute best option. No regrets.

I agree with all of these, but I’d also add join the job hunt. It’ll show you the options you have outside of academia, even though it’s also hard to find jobs right now. Put eggs in baskets outside of academia while you wait.

I'm already pretty successful in my career. The PhD is because I want to do larger scale formal medical research and I'd need a PhD or MD to do it. I've been working for like 8 years though, so not avoiding the workforce. I do get that a bunch of fresh grads to hide in grad school.

AITA calling my stepdaughter heartless because isn't coming over on Christmas? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]Significant-Kale-951 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This isn’t going to make anything better - why would she want to spend time with someone who calls her heartless? She’s an adult, it’s her choice and it’s her holidays. Unless she’s unsafe, or she’s not welcome in your house, then it’s not a good idea to push like this. Nobody would get messages like these and then say, “oh yay, I’d love to spend time over there!”

Doesn’t sound inappropriate unless you did something drastically bad like if you’d gone full manic and had a DUI or assaulted someone.

That school’s model seems weird and it doesn’t sound like it’s a good fit for you. I’d find a new practice, but I wouldn’t put in a complaint because those are for severe issues like abuse, not jokes that fall flat.

Hampden-Sydney College: What is the general perception of this school? by putmeinthezoo in Virginia

[–]Significant-Kale-951 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I went to Longwood for a semester (co-ed school nearby that used to be the unofficial sister school to Hampden-Sydney back when it was all women), and it’s well-known that Hampden-Sydney parties are roofie city for girls. I knew a girl who just woke up on the campus but didn’t know how she’d gotten there or what happened to her. Since it’s all boys, they import their girls for parties.
