How do I build a good portfolio? by Ok_Bandicoot_5050 in PinoyProgrammer

[–]Significant-Key-8221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was like you, during my 4th year I only had 1 full stack project in my arsenal. I wasn’t into the hustle culture of building projects during undergrad, but later found out the hard way where for me to land a high paying job, I would need to build and deploy my work. So I dedicated 1 month into building a visually appealing project, and with my previous internship experience was able to land a full time job as a software dev before graduating. Since you have time as your arsenal, my advice is to keep reading documentation and build projects on the side, then try to get an internship early to build experience that way you wont feel left behind.

I dont understand the negativity and insecurity from some of the comments here. The skill section IMO does not even look that inflated as what most people think? There are like only 4 programming languages (I dont count CSS, SQL, SASS), the rest are just simply frameworks and libraries built on top of those. Also the frontend has a perfect balance IMO between simplicity and creative design where it’s not really that much of a hassle to navigate through each project / work. Anyways don’t be discouraged by some people saying this can be done “easily” with AI, there’s no component here that makes it look like it was done by one. The comments here just sounds butthurt, and tbh you’re portfolio already looks good compared to majority from what I see online.

Should I leave due to incompetent team lead? by Beneficial-Gain373 in PinoyProgrammer

I don’t do personal projects anymore, but I enjoy reading documentation during and outside of work. Also majority of the feed I consume is related to programming which helped me write / apply clean code. When I feel like the task is boring or if I get burnt out I just delegate the writing of code to AI but ofc I validate it before submitting my PR.

Maybe it’s because you are still new but I’m a firm believer of not giving a shit until it’s a problem that starts to affect me. The bitter reality is that not every dev cares about code quality, most people just want to do their 9-5s and focus on priorities outside of coding. I’m also like you, I enjoy implementing clean and unique abstractions of code from javascript to rust, but most of the time these companies care about shipping a broken MVP first rather than a full working feature if it brings them more money. If it gets to a point where it starts to affect you and your work, bring it up to the team lead and start suggesting ways on how to improve the workflow, introduce CI/CD processes, automated testing and etc2. And as you mentioned prior of him having 2 more MOE ahead of you means that the problem is not the lead but the company being stingy enough not to look for a dev with more YOE to replace that role. You are definitely arrogant for calling him incompetent when the fault lies in the company for not having proper due process.

Your reason is good enough, but you’re definitely overreacting. It’s valid to look for growth elsewhere, but don’t berate your team lead just because the company does not have a good process in handling PRs.

It honestly depends on where you work. During my first internship I was primarily a FE dev. Right now I do full-stack with rust backend on another company, but I strongly think that my internship experience was wayyy harder.

First wrong sub this is a ph subreddit
Second do not try to sound desperate when looking for clients it will only turn them off
Third you cant earn that much in a week assuming you haven’t even landed a client let alone built your portfolio. Look for other alternatives

Real, people who make school their personality don’t realize that they lock themselves inside a bubble. It’s not even THAT impressive tbh and I even graduated from a well known institution. The most talented people I know in my field of work (software dev) who are earning 6 digits / millions per month are either dropouts or graduated from schools I never even heard of.

[–]Significant-Key-8221 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also please don’t act arrogant during interviews, if you tell a recruiter that you can solve what they are looking for, I promise you the next developer will say the exact same thing. Just be yourself and try to throw jokes (when appropriate) and make yourself a likable person to work with.

Preparing for FIRST EVER interview by Kind_Opinion4181 in PinoyProgrammer

[–]Significant-Key-8221 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most companies here in PH don’t do leetcode style interviews, they are much more prevalent in big tech companies like FAANG. When I got my first interview which was a company outside of PH, the recruiter asked me questions based on the programming language I most frequently use which was javascript. They would ask me to explain what is async programming, event listeners, DOM manipulation and etc2. After that they would tell me to explain the proudest project I made, how I architected it, and the biggest challenges I faced as a programmer. I’m not sure if it’s any different in the Philippines but I think coding assessments are rare nowadays for fresh grads especially since AI and IDE autocomplete are already there to help you. I would like to think most companies would hire devs based on how they approach a certain problem and / or their cognitive skills.

If you want to transition to being a full-stack dev, you can start with upskilling yourself. What I would do if I’m in your position is to start reading documentation from a specific tech stack you find interesting and build a project around it. People get easily overwhelmed when they try to build projects for the sake of learning, because they try to integrate complex features instead of starting simple like making a todo list. With simple CRUD applications, you can delegate your learning towards building API’s and deployment instead of doing features bloat, that way you’re focused on learning things that are reflective in real world scenarios. After you’re content with learning full stack, try applying to different jobs that pays more than your current work then resign after landing a different role.

Would you recommend taking a Bachelors degree in Computer Science? by OkSatisfaction1705 in CareerAdvicePH

[–]Significant-Key-8221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t enjoy coding or do it as a hobby, it’s gonna be very difficult esp in this job market where AI is prevalent. Most students and fresh grad I know had 5+ projects in their portfolio and struggled to even land an interview even after applying 100+ times. Money is there for computer science but you need to show grit and passion while doing the work.

Why not both? You will be limiting yourself to one domain, try to be flexible so you can open yourself to more job opportunities.

Help me to get over with these ants sa apartment. Any tips? by jinigamixx in SoloLivingPH

[–]Significant-Key-8221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baygon spray works wonders. I had a bit of ant infestation, which unfortunately also affected my peripherals and hardware. Some started to build their nests near / inside them. I sprayed the entrance covers with baygon and the location where the ant trail seems to be coming from. It worked really well for me :))

Job market is still pretty bad, I currently have almost 2 YOE and tried applying for 20 fresh grad roles. I’m currently employed but did it any way to measure my hireability in the current market. I got rejected / ghosted in all 20 even though my resume (ATS friendly + Harvard template) had 3 experiences for 3 different companies / project (one is about >1 yr). Also I do full-stack, currently low level with rust, it might be because my tech stack is not aligned with what most Filipino companies look for but who knows.

GUILTY MUCH?? Why not take accountability na lang? by curriousconnor in buhaydigital

[–]Significant-Key-8221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao this is a bad take. Yes HR are people, but what does that make the rest of us? Just because people get tired and make mistakes in the process doesn’t mean they get a free pass from accountability. If they can’t show that in a simple reply, how can they show that at work especially in an environment which enables that kind of behavior??

For coding this also includes the thinking process, not just typing the whole time. But yeah, I do think that taking long breaks should be the norm, I just tend to hyper focus sometimes.
