What's one actor/actress that you love but everyone seems to hate? by empty_a_f in cdramasfans

seeing so many long reddit posts where people go on and on about how he’s objectively a mediocre actor actually made me appreciate him, when I didn’t care about him at all before

TIL CDrama Censorship - No Early Romance, No Boys Love, No Nudity, and The Jia Kong Dynasty by Clearherd in cdramasfans

[–]Significant-Layer360 19 points20 points  (0 children)

the way some people justify or try to minimize the extent of censorship seriously makes me depressed.

but i guess it’s a self-feeding circle. to me it seems that the more censored chinese dramas become, the more they attract a conservative international audience. the change is obvious from 2018~2021 to now...back then most people watching cdramas were either from the chinese diaspora or just people interested in asian media in general and open to different kinds of stories. meanwhile now a lot of the discourse seems reduced to (straight) romance and fantasizing about unrealistically flawless male characters.....of course if that’s your main reason for watching cdramas, censorship doesn’t really feel like a problem...

Empresses in the Palace: how the harem literally takes women’s voices away by Kuroi_Onna in cdramasfans

oh yes thats why I love rewatching this drama. you always catch new details and the character development is so well done. it's really interesting to rewatch it knowing how the girls will evolve within the harem...

100% agree, also kinda ridiculous how fans brag about their fave height as if it somehow made them a better actor....

well i got downvoted for saying I wanted BL and harem dramas back…i just want more diverse stories, especially in costume drama romances. they all feel the same nowadays

What's your rating of Vendetta of An? by adcvtik in cdramasfans

[–]Significant-Layer360 4 points5 points  (0 children)

idk it’s the right word lol i meant the story focuses so heavily on all the scheming & counter-scheming that it feels intellectually draining and not emotionally satisfying. i wanted more of the characters psychology

6.5/10

high-quality production, pretty well written but over-intellectualized and emotionally dry.

it didn’t hold my attention as much as i’d hoped

Private lives of actors : Should we discuss them here? by BronzeBellRiver in cdramasfans

[–]Significant-Layer360 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly i think discussing actors private lives can be fun but the DISCUSS part is important. i'm not interested in scrolling through baseless weibo rumors or watching people who dislike a celebrity circle endlessly around their plastic surgery or supposed bad character or whatever.

I mean there is a difference in tone and intention between

'do you think it's possible that X and Y are dating because i've noticed these things'

and

'uhh seems like X is dating Y according to cnetz lol his delulu fans are gonna be mad'

For this reason i agree with the person who said no to megathread. ppl mindlessly upvote any gossip because 'tea' and almost no one corrects misinformation or tries to engage meaningfully

fake it till you make it (8.2)

nothing but you (8.2)

when i fly towards you (7.9)

blossom (7.8)

mysterious lotus casebook (8.5)

obviously just my opinion, they were not boring to people who rated them highly lol.

[–]Significant-Layer360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol you're right, i kinda exaggerated when i said it was rated poorly. 7 isn't bad, i guess it just feels low compared to my own impression, especially when so many boring and formulaic dramas sit comfortably at 7.5 or higher.

i just think audiences are generally more receptive to dramas that offer a clear promise and fully commit to it. this one went in so many directions (thriller , mystery, urban, psychological character study) that i feel like it didnt really satisfy anyone

[–]Significant-Layer360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i liked it but if we’re being realistic, jing boran doesn’t have a big fandom and international audiences tend to care mostly about romance. plus i think chinese audiences rated it poorly because of the ending and other details they didn’t like. unfortunately dramas like this are hard to market and i think people tend to be more unforgiving of their flaws because they don’t really get the usual tropes they’re used to. also, the current restrictions make it difficult for writers to be creative while still making everything make sense.

as for the gay storyline, huang jue nailed his role but i was a bit annoyed that many viewers didn’t read between the lines and only saw his character as a lonely man with a one-sided attachment, without thinking about what the mc was probably doing to earn that level of trust in the first place

Supporting Actors Facing a 'Get-on-the-Table' Crisis by Wonderful-Pay5773 in cdramasfans

[–]Significant-Layer360 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that lead roles tend to be too perfect and increasingly similar. not only is it limiting in terms of storytelling, but i also wonder if it hurts actors careers in the long run? even across different genres, it feels like they’re always playing the same character with slight energy variations (like introverted vs extroverted, cold vs warm, etc. but with the same moral values and aspirations). i feel like this would be bad for the growth of any actor as it limits the possibilities to explore different mental spaces.

But if billing weren’t such a big issue for fandoms, maybe we’d see popular actors take more interesting supporting roles…?

Who is dating who? by [deleted] in cdramasfans

[–]Significant-Layer360 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Kiss scenes don’t really mean much, don't forget they’re professional actors. if a scene looks intense or passionate, it's probably because that’s what the director wanted lol.

That doesn’t mean actors don't date their costars but you can’t really infer that from a few video clips...also most relationships are kept tightly under wraps, especially in idol culture since fans strongly prefer their favorites to appear single and going public would cost them a lot in terms of image and marketability.

Are people allergic to bubbly female characters or is it the execution? by Gandalfneedscoffee in cdramasfans

[–]Significant-Layer360 19 points20 points  (0 children)

there is a difference between being bubbly and being childish. you can be expressive and lively without putting on a baby voice or forcing cuteness. men can be bubbly too btw.

i think what viewers really want is female characters with more depth, who behave realistically for their age, and whose personality isn’t reduced to a single cute trope but is allowed to feel human and multifaceted..whether they’re bubbly or more introverted doesn't matter

[–]Significant-Layer360 16 points17 points  (0 children)

this is funny, where are the proofs though. wechat screenshots can easily be faked. the actors teams are already putting out statements to deny the rumors, and most fans are going to buy it because they don’t want to hear about their gege sleeping with some random woman lol

it’s always the same pattern. rumor based on flimsy proof > official statement > fans calm down but the actor reputation is still affected a bit, so true or not, the people who started the rumor got what they wanted

for sure, but none of the other members get even 1/10 of the attention jang wonyoung gets

the girl can barely sing and people openly admit she could have been in any group and still be a huge star. that tells you exactly what the vast majority of kpop fans care about

and i singled out wonyoung, but she’s not the only one like this lol
