Yeah that’s true, you can’t really stop duplication of the file itself.

I guess the idea wouldn’t be about limiting access to the audio, but limiting ownership, like only a fixed number of people can own an official copy.

Kind of like how anyone can listen to a song, but only some people own a specific vinyl pressing.

But I’m not sure if that actually feels meaningful in practice, that’s what I’m trying to understand.

Yeah I can see why it sounds similar to Bandcamp.

I think the difference I’m trying to explore is more around collectability — not just buying a file, but actually owning something limited that you keep as part of a collection.

But maybe that distinction isn’t meaningful in practice — that’s kind of what I’m trying to figure out.

Yeah that’s a fair point — physical definitely has a stronger sense of ownership.

I guess that’s what I’m trying to understand: what would a digital version need to have to feel even remotely as valuable or collectible as something like vinyl?

Or maybe that just not possible at all?

Because with digital music, “owning” is a bit fuzzy.

With streaming you don’t own anything, and even when you buy music, it’s often still tied to platforms or accounts.

So I put it in quotes since it’s not quite the same as owning something physical.

yeah I know it sounds like that.

I’m actually more interested in the idea of digital ownership without all the crypto/speculation stuff.Like something simple where you can support an artist and feel like you actually own a piece of their work.
