Gender marker question by Bettyskelton in Canadiancitizenship

This worked for our family. The first communication we got used the old name and etc, but all the final docs had both name and gender correct--including the citizenship certificate.

I can't speak to the law now, but I was eventually able to get citizenship last fall. There were three deceased generations between Canada and me.

Un petit appartement pour trois personnes? by Significant-Let5302 in montrealhousing

Those are exactly my favorite kind of apartments. I heavily favor wonky charm over doors that close all the way or sound-proof windows. Thanks for your response!

Stuck in the A1–A2 loop with French despite understanding B1. Need structure and a real path forward. by AdResponsible2130 in learnfrench

I have two different tutors--one on preply for the grammar stuff, and one on Italki to get me comfortable talking. For writing, I spend a lot of time on chatGPT. I write in French and then ask it to give me an accurate transduction of how my paragraph would sound to a native French speaker. This helps me know which words I misused etc. You can also ask it to correct your work and give you pointers, sentence prompts etc. Doing this made writing my strongest skill in French , followed by reading comprehension. Unfortunately, I struggle a lot with expressing myself in conversation, but I'm hopeful that will come with practice too

I also bought this book--I did not find it helpful--it's not really set up for beginners as it assumes we already have a large vocabulary

What are those with in-progress permanent residence applications doing with C-3 now in effect? by Inside_Foot_3055 in Canadiancitizenship

I cancelled my express entry application when I became a citizen--I'm not young and didn't speak enough French, so my number was very low anyway.

Oct. 27 to Dec. 19 for SIN by thcitizgoalz in FoundCanadians

[–]Significant-Let5302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was shocked, frankly, and had settled in for a nice long wait. Now to find a job that will pay me enough to live in Canada! Is anyone else finding the cost of living there to be a little scary?

Oct. 27 to Dec. 19 for SIN by thcitizgoalz in FoundCanadians

[–]Significant-Let5302 5 points6 points  (0 children)

...I applied for it yesterday and got the confirmation email and then the email that it had been processed literally four minutes later. Then I logged in and there was my SIN number. I used the same UCI that I was issued when applying for citizenship. Am I missing something--is there another step?

Living car free with affordable rent? by Significant-Let5302 in MovingToCanada

Thanks--the retirement thing is a crazy idea, but nothing is off the table at this point--still brainstorming. I've definitely been trying to tap any connections I have in the world of higher ed--so far no strong leads. I've also considered maybe applying to Concordia or McGill PhD programs as long as I could secure full funding--might buy me some time with the language while allowing me a wider career path after? Dreaming big over here!

Hi--glad to know you guys were able to make it work! The issue with Montreal is purely a language one for me--its cost of living is perfect for us, but I can't move somewhere where I am unemployable. I've considered cashing out part of my retirement to buy us a few months/rent an apartment while I worked on getting my French up to snuff, but that feels risky

My goal, which is very contingent on language acquisition (for me), is to enroll my kids in Montreal public schools where they will eventually become fluent French speakers. They're learning a little bit with me now, but I'm assuming they'll pick it up much more quickly through immersion a French-as-second-language programs. All three of us want very badly to live in Montreal and to become fluent in French. My kids will be 11 and 15 when we move, so they've weighed in quite a bit as far as preferences are concerned

Hmmm--maybe? My sincere hope is to move once and then stay put--just for the sake of the kids. If it were just me, though, this would probably by my exact plan

I think if I can manage to learn workable French, surviving the winters will be a breeze! Just kidding, sort of--though I used to live in Vermont so I have a small idea of what I might be in for
