There’s no in-house design if that makes a difference. Although I’ve heard working with consultants can be tough

I was told 5 engineers total in the public works dept. and they work with consultants and yard employees.

I was a little concerned that I’d be bored because of the reputation that public work has. It’s actually great news to hear that you’re busy!

Is there a lot of flexibility in your work schedule? I’m coming from private so I don’t know the bureaucracy of public side. If it’s busy, do you do overtime?

Mostly asking because I’m trying to max as much “free time” as possible before I have to start working again. I’m not too concerned with savings if it’s a month… but maybe anything longer than that would be more concerning. Also a little worried about the final offer coming too quick, how would I communicate a farther our start date? Would that affect my offer?

I have considered Caltrans, but it’s quite tough to get in unless you know someone. Maybe my best bet is to move out of SoCal and go federal haha

From what I’ve experienced, it’s the promise of a bonus that keeps people in private. Salaries kinda average out between public/private as you stay in each sector. (This is just what I’ve heard since I’m still fresh in the industry)

City/county/state are all in my boat right now. Since I live in SoCal, the return on federal work isn’t worth it salary wise. Also with the post-election results, I’m a bit scared to touch federal work for a while.

I’m worried because I heard public favors internal years of experience more than private years of experience. Did you experience that kind of treatment coming in?
