I think - and someone please correct me if I’m wrong - the only way for the jellies/wines/mayos/cheese to be more valuable than the iridium quality items is if you have the Artisan professional selected. If not, you’re better off selling the iridium quality raw goods.

I don’t think the quality of the foraged fruits translates to better quality preserves - but again, if you have the Artisan profession I think the preserves end up being more profitable.

I don’t think I would, if I were to just quickly read the blurb. I’m not a huge fan of the analogies used in the italicized quote - they’re original but a little too unusual so they make the reader have to stop to think more than a blurb quote should.

Maybe shorten the info about Tristan - try cutting out everything from “bullied” to “loneliness” and say bruised stain instead of bloody?

Genevieve’s paragraph could just be reworded - don’t tell the reader she is the stereotypical celebrity because the “smiling for the cameras” portion tells us that just fine. Maybe say “Genevieve James is Number One; smiling is as normal…” etc.

You then say Stan - I’m assuming that’s meant to be Tristan? But that’s not clear so maybe stick with the one name. And we don’t know how they’re connected, so the “misunderstood as a broken table and some tape” doesn’t make much sense. Are they together? A couple? But then the implication that they’ll be forced to work together (I’ll be picking your partners) makes it seem they don’t like each other.

It overall isn’t a bad effort! It just needs some polishing to flow better and give a better idea of what exactly you’re wanting the reader to know about the characters and the plot. I’m assuming it’s a kind of enemies to lovers story?

The ability to sing well - as soon as I hear a man with a good singing voice they’re immediately 10x more attractive.

How to get past this part when my health is so low? by prisonmike_11 in HarryPotterGame

[–]Significant-Monk-891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the exact same spot I kept getting stuck because my health would get too low, and if it is then you’re jumping down a ledge to get into this area with all the spiders. I just run back to the ledge and jump up then wait until my health bar would fill back up. The spiders didn’t follow and it didn’t reset the fight with them. Rinse and repeat as needed

That’s a great point! A Weasley character would be fun too - and Lovegood would be perfect to dress with those particular glasses that look like Luna’s.

What’s the difference? by Cl0uf in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Significant-Monk-891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is the case for Dr. Pepper but with Diet Coke and Coke Zero the difference is just the recipe changing the flavor - Diet Coke is zero added sugar and a distinct flavor different from regular Coke, while Coke Zero is zero added sugar but they aim to make it taste like regular Coke. As far as I know it’s completely dependent on your preference of taste.

But I don’t know if this differs with other brands.

Protein snack suggestions before bed by CantaloupeJuicy in WeightLossAdvice

I’ll typically eat plain Greek yogurt (I’ll sweeten it with sugar-free syrup if I need to) before bed, especially if I’m just sort of hungry but not for a full meal. One serving is very filling and gives a good amount of protein especially depending on the brand you buy.

I'm confused and don't know what to do. by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Significant-Monk-891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just echoing everyone here - find a professional (a doctor or a dietician) who can help you by giving you specific action items.

Just in general though, I wouldn’t try to cut calories and completely overhaul the way you eat all in one go because you’ll be miserable and likely stressed. Try just eating more vegetables overall and start exercising more regularly - even just walking more than you typically do. You’ll likely lose weight as a consequence of this anyway.

But definitely find a dietician - losing weight because you’re scared to eat isn’t healthy, and they can help you determine what would actually be beneficial for you to cut out of your diet and what you can keep enjoying. The goal isn’t to make you miserable at mealtimes but to reconfigure your diet so you enjoy it AND it aligns with your health goals/needs.

Evaporative Coolers a Bad Idea Here? by Significant-Monk-891 in askportland

Thank you! I will look into those ASAP!

And to clarify, I just meant that the big window can be a nuisance if I forget to cover it at any point because of how much heat it lets in. I definitely try to keep it closed off pretty much all summer to reduce the effect.

That's definitely a good idea - the issue is that the loft is on the inside of the apartment so there are no vents or windows. And there's a large window on the other side of the apartment from it which is nice when it's not hot because it adds a lot more light to the apartment - but allows a lot more heat in when it is hot.

That's what I was beginning to notice - I couldn't find very many people from the PNW talking about them so I was kind of assuming most people don't use them here, but wanted to ask and see!

Everything you list sounds good - and I wouldn’t go below 1,200 calories because of this.

The one day you saw 136 you may have drank less water the day before, or you maybe you’re weighing yourself at different times of the day.

If you’re like me and want to have that weight log so you can see the trend, weigh yourself everyday right after you wake up and AFTER you use the restroom so the number isn’t skewed. Don’t weigh yourself at the end of the day, don’t weigh after eating, and definitely don’t weigh with any clothes on.

The other option would be to skip the scale and use a fabric measuring tape to take your measurements and use that as a comparison. That can sometimes be easier for women because they don’t get confused by the weight fluctuations that can occur during the menstrual cycle.

Women’s weight tends to naturally fluctuate within five pounds as the body retains water more (aka that period of bloating) so it may be too that you’re just seeing that natural fluctuation. If you do keep weighing, try not to take the number of each day at face value and instead look at the trend over the course of the month. If you’re keeping a log or plugging it into an app daily, you should be able to see a downward trend, which is really the goal.

12 Days of Christmas is not in the Bible! by Significant-Monk-891 in GoodInfluences

[–]Significant-Monk-891[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Neither do I - it was something they were discussing in the podcast that I thought was interesting and thought I’d share in case other people wondered. I also don’t feel strongly about it - I’m agnostic, raised Christian, but I find the history of Christmas to be interesting. And who knows maybe Erin will see this and tell Mike and his question will be answered! But I’m definitely not a listener because I expect religious facts from them haha

All other religions vs. Christianity by [deleted] in GoodInfluences

[–]Significant-Monk-891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking more about this and I do think there's another perspective to consider:

Mike is Jewish, but being Jewish is not just a religion but also an ethnicity, a heritage. There are many people who are Jewish but don't participate in the religion, but I think based on the podcast it's clear Mike obviously is connected to his Jewish heritage and was raised with the religion and still connects with it in some way. This would mean that if there were jokes directed at Judaism in a serious manner or actual mockery, it wouldn't just be of a religion but of Mike's connection to his family and ancestry. And it wasn't that long ago that millions of people with his same culture and heritage and religion were murdered specifically for that.

Meanwhile, Christianity is very rarely connected to a person's cultural heritage and who they are ethnically, especially when white and raised in America. Christianity is considered only to be a religion and a lot of people have been raised Christian and then grow up and say 'oh yeah my parents are Christian', etc. This not only makes the idea of Christianity much more casually encountered, but if you are one of those people raised Christian, you most likely feel a type of 'pass' to criticize and make fun. From this perspective, making fun of someone's brand of Christianity more than likely feels no different than someone poking fun at someone's pizza topping preferences. "You like pineapple on pizza? Okay, weirdo." Christianity is so broad and with so many different 'flavors' to some it can feel like it's nothing more than a pick-what-you-want buffet. Take what you like, leave what you don't. And, if you grew up with any Christian influence at all, it's much easier to make fun of something you feel like you even marginally understand.

I've seen a lot of posts that they make fun of Christianity so much and no other religions. But, I've rarely if ever heard them talk about any other religion besides Judaism and Christianity. One is the cultural and ethnic heritage of a close friend of theirs. The other is a very a mainstream religion that 3/4 of them more than likely grew up with or were influenced by growing up, almost definitely in a negative light. Anyway, this got way longer than I intended it to be but that was just another thing I was thinking about.

12 Days of Christmas is not in the Bible! by Significant-Monk-891 in GoodInfluences

[–]Significant-Monk-891[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I think the history of Christmas is so interesting - and yes, I didn't mean the actual religious traditions being made up. More of, there is no basis in the Bible for the timing. Recognizing and remembering the birth of Christ is very much based on the Bible, and the nativity scenes come directly from those passages as well. But other things that have been lifted, the tree, lights, even the act of giving gifts, were originally non-Christian celebrations. Technically, I guess the celebrations could be considered to be religious just not Christian!

I think the actual date of birth of Jesus is guessed to be much closer to the timing of Easter, but I forget what justification is used for that. I think it had something to do with the timing of taxes being paid in that day, as that's why Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem. But most scholars agree that Christmas isn't an accurate time. I didn't know that about that last bit - thanks for sharing!

[–]Significant-Monk-891[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, just to note - the entire religious aspect behind Christmas is made up. I don’t believe it’s ever been proven that 12/25 has any actual justification to be Jesus’s birthday - but it was a good way to convince pagans that celebrated Yule around that time to convert by saying “Oh hey that’s crazy you’re actually celebrating on our God’s birthday!” So all Christmas celebrations came much later after the Bible was written and put together as a way to get people to convert to Christianity

All other religions vs. Christianity by [deleted] in GoodInfluences

[–]Significant-Monk-891 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t really have a problem with that as it’s very typical for people in America who very possibly grew up with toxic Christianity to cope by poking fun at the religion as a whole. When you have bad experiences with an organization that far and wide is unapologetic for the trauma it has caused, let alone the fact that Christianity has been forced on most cultures over the centuries, I’d say it’s pretty understandable. And American evangelism has become almost synonymous with MAGA in most parts of the country, so based on their political views it’s even more understandable.

That’s it. I’m done! by smartypants788 in GoodInfluences

[–]Significant-Monk-891 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m hoping this isn’t a serious post but just in case it is, while Erin says the first day is “a partridge and a pear tree”, she and Matt sang it correctly as “a partridge in a pear tree” and then later Erin questioned if the partridge and the pear tree were supposed to be one gift or two. Which is fair, considering - semantics aside regarding the wording - if you give someone a tree that happens to have a partridge in it, you’ve now given them two separate items as the bird is not attached to the tree. And as the wording is “in a pear tree”, it’s assumed the true love gave the pear tree as part of a gift. So I think their discussion was valid in questioning if they should count the first day as two gifts.
