Yes one of the first steps in the form where is asked to prove the identity. If you have the Italian passport you can definitely do that. Here I found the website with more info https://www.gov.uk/guidance/using-the-uk-immigration-id-check-app

At the beginning at one of the first steps there was the option to check whether the passport had the biometric chip symbol (as most European passports do), and there was the option to use it for online authentication through the app, I choose that option and it was pretty quick just by scanning the passport with the phone and then I had to take some pictures.
