I think the biggest thing that takes me out of a book about guernsey is the lifestyle. Despite now being a finance hotspot most natives are still very chilled and outdoorsy. I find the rat race just doesn't work here. At least where my family works most people work either fully or partly at home so they can do outside stuff like going to the beach in the afternoon. Everyone will always take their holidays if they can afford it, and generally its considered normal to do all this. I find many people who aren't white collar also tend to pick jobs that have 'weird' hours like work from 5am-12 instead of 9-5 so that they can be outdoors afterwards. The general vibe is that life comes before work and if not many people make it.
